The Hotel Transylvania series is a fun American animated story created by Todd Durham. It's made by Sony Pictures Animation. This series includes four main movies, three short films, a TV show, and several video games.

Many famous voices bring the characters to life. These include Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Fran Drescher, and Molly Shannon.

The first movie, Hotel Transylvania, came out in September 2012. Two sequels followed: Hotel Transylvania 2 in September 2015 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation in July 2018. These movies earned over $1.3 billion around the world. The fourth and final movie, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, was released online on Amazon Prime Video on January 14, 2022.

The stories are all about monsters living at the Hotel Transylvania. This is a special hotel where monsters can relax. They go there to escape from humans, who they are afraid of. Many characters in the series are based on famous movie monsters.

How the Story Started

The idea for Hotel Transylvania came from a comedy writer named Todd Durham. He brought his idea to Sony Pictures Animation, and they decided to make it into movies.

The Hotel Transylvania series has four main movies. Each one tells a new part of the monsters' adventures.

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

This is the first movie in the series. It came out on September 28, 2012. The story is about a human boy named Johnny (Andy Samberg). He accidentally finds Dracula's monster hotel. Johnny quickly falls in love with Dracula's daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez). Dracula (Adam Sandler) tries to keep them apart, but it doesn't work!

Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

The second movie was released on September 25, 2015. Mavis and Johnny now have a son named Dennis. He is half-human and half-vampire. Mavis thinks the hotel might not be the best place for Dennis to grow up. She wants to move to California. Dracula is sad that Dennis doesn't show any vampire powers. So, he tries to help his friends make Dennis a vampire. Things get even more complicated when Dracula's old-fashioned father, Vlad (Mel Brooks), arrives.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)

This third movie came out on July 13, 2018. Dracula and his family go on a monster cruise ship for a vacation. While on the ship, Dracula falls in love with the ship's captain, Ericka (Kathryn Hahn). But there's a big secret: Ericka is the great-granddaughter of the famous monster hunter Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan).

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)

The fourth and final movie was released online on January 14, 2022. In this film, Dracula (now voiced by Brian Hull) and Johnny accidentally get turned into different forms. Dracula becomes human, and Johnny becomes a monster! They have to work together to find a cure. They need to change back before their transformations become permanent.

Television Series

A TV show based on the movies started on June 25, 2017. It ended on October 29, 2020. This show is a prequel, meaning it tells stories that happened before the first movie. It focuses on Mavis when she was 114 or 115 years old. It shows her adventures with her friends at the Hotel Transylvania. The show was shown on the Disney Channel around the world.

Short Films

The Hotel Transylvania series also has several short films.

Goodnight Mr. Foot (2012)

This short film came out on October 26, 2012. It features Bigfoot from the first movie. It was shown in movie theaters before Hotel Transylvania. The short film was written and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, who also directed the main movies. It's about Bigfoot trying to sleep at the hotel. But an energetic witch maid keeps disturbing his rest.

Puppy! (2017)

Puppy! is a short film released on July 28, 2017. It was shown in theaters before The Emoji Movie. This short features Dennis (voiced by Asher Blinkoff) from Hotel Transylvania 2. Selena Gomez (Mavis), Andy Samberg (Johnny), and Adam Sandler (Dracula) also returned to voice their characters. In the short, Dennis convinces Dracula to get him a giant monster puppy named Tinkles. The hotel then has to learn how to deal with this huge new pet.

Monster Pets (2021)

This short film came out on April 9, 2021. It shows Dracula trying to find a friend for his lively puppy, Tinkles. This short was the first time Adam Sandler did not voice Dracula. Brian Hull took over the role. Brian Hull later voiced Dracula in the movie Hotel Transylvania: Transformania.

  • Hotel Transylvania Dash: This mobile game came out on September 20, 2012. It was a version of the popular Hotel Dash game, but with Hotel Transylvania characters.
  • Hotel Transylvania BooClips Deluxe: This was a digital storybook app released on September 20, 2012. You could read the story on different devices.
  • Hotel Transylvania 3 Monsters Overboard: This game, based on the third movie, was released on July 13, 2018.
  • Hotel Transylvania: Scary-Tale Adventures: This game came out on March 11, 2022. It was available on many gaming platforms like Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
