Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (also known as Hotel Transylvania 4) is a fun animated comedy film from 2022. It was made by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. This movie is the fourth and final part of the popular Hotel Transylvania series. It continues the story from Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018).

The film was directed by Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska. The story was written by Genndy Tartakovsky, who also directed the first three movies. Famous actors like Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez lend their voices to the characters. In this adventure, Dracula and Johnny accidentally switch places. Dracula becomes human, and Johnny becomes a monster. They must travel to South America to change back before it's too late!

The movie was originally planned for cinemas in 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony Pictures Releasing decided to sell the movie to Amazon Studios. It was then released on Amazon Prime Video on January 14, 2022. It also had a cinema release in China on April 3.

Plot Summary

The story begins at a big party celebrating Hotel Transylvania's 125th birthday. Dracula plans to retire and give the hotel to his daughter Mavis and her husband Johnny. Mavis tells Johnny the good news, and he gets very excited. Johnny starts talking about all his ideas to change the hotel.

Dracula worries that Johnny will ruin the hotel. So, he tells a small lie. He says there's a "monster real-estate law" that only lets monsters own the hotel. Johnny feels very disappointed by this news.

Luckily, Van Helsing wants to help Johnny. He has a special ray that can turn humans into monsters and monsters into humans. After testing it on his pet guinea pig, he uses it on Johnny. Johnny instantly transforms into a huge, dragon-like monster!

Dracula sees monster Johnny and tries to turn him back. But he accidentally zaps himself with the ray! Now, Dracula is a human, and the ray's crystal breaks. Van Helsing explains that they can fix the ray. They need a new crystal from the Cave of Reflexion in South America. So, Dracula and Johnny begin their long journey.

Meanwhile, Dracula's friends Frank, Wayne, Griffin, and Murray also turn human. They drank from a fountain that was accidentally zapped by the ray. Mavis and Ericka find out about Dracula and Johnny from the news. Van Helsing warns them that humans who become monsters can get more wild over time. So, Mavis and the others rush to South America to find them.

As Dracula and Johnny travel through the jungle, they start to get along better. Dracula almost tells Johnny his secret about the "monster law." But then, the rest of their friends find them. Dracula finally admits that he lied about the hotel. He also says he didn't want Johnny to take over.

Johnny gets very upset and believes Dracula doesn't see him as family. This makes Johnny mutate even more, and he runs away. Mavis goes to find Johnny, who is now very wild. She leads him to the Cave of Reflexion, where they find the crystal.

Mavis tries to turn Johnny back, but he's too out of control. In a desperate moment, Dracula lets Johnny capture him. Dracula then tells Johnny how wrong he was. He says he now sees the best in Johnny and truly accepts him as family. This heartfelt speech brings Johnny back to his senses. He finally turns back into a human.

With everyone back to normal, they return home. They find the hotel is almost destroyed by Gigi, the guinea pig! After turning Gigi back to normal, Dracula lets Mavis and Johnny rebuild the hotel however they like. One year later, the hotel is completely new and amazing. Dracula loves the changes, and everyone is happy.

In September 2020, Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon were chosen as the directors. Selena Gomez, who voices Mavis, also became an executive producer. The movie was made remotely, meaning people worked from different places, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In April 2021, the movie's title was announced as Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. It was also confirmed that this would be the final movie in the series. At the same time, Sony announced that Adam Sandler would not return as the voice of Dracula. Brian Hull, who voiced Dracula in the short film Monster Pets, took over the role.

Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, David Spade, and Keegan-Michael Key returned to voice their characters. In May 2021, it was announced that Brad Abrell replaced Kevin James as the voice of Frankenstein. Lynn Hobson was the editor for the film.

Movie Music

Mark Mothersbaugh created the music for Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. He also composed the music for the first three movies in the series. The movie's soundtrack was released on December 16, 2022, by Sony Classical.

The end credits song, "Love Is Not Hard to Find," was written by Morien van der Tang, Faried Arween Jhauw, Glen Faria, and Jheynner Argot. Yendry performed the song, and it was released on January 14, 2022.

Release Information

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania was released by Amazon Studios on Prime Video on January 14, 2022. The movie's release date changed several times. It was first set for December 22, 2021, then moved to August 6, 2021, and then to July 23, 2021. Finally, it was rescheduled to October 1, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In August 2021, Sony Pictures decided not to release the movie in cinemas in the United States. This was because of the rising number of SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant cases. Instead, they sold the distribution rights to Amazon Studios for $100 million. Amazon released the movie exclusively on Prime Video worldwide, except for China. Sony still released the movie in cinemas in China on April 3, 2022.
