Kathryn Marie Hahn (born July 23, 1973) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in many comedy films and TV shows. Kathryn often plays funny and memorable characters.
Some of her popular movies include How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), and Step Brothers (2008). She also starred in Bad Moms (2016) and its sequel A Bad Moms Christmas (2017). Kids might recognize her voice as Ericka Van Helsing in the Hotel Transylvania movies (2018–2022) and as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
On TV, Kathryn has been in several popular series. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in Transparent (2014–2019). She also played the magical character Agatha Harkness in the Disney+ series WandaVision (2021), which earned her more award nominations. She continued this role in the spin-off series Agatha All Along in 2024. In 2023, she starred in the Hulu series Tiny Beautiful Things. Early Life and Education
Kathryn Marie Hahn was born in Westchester, Illinois. Her parents are Karen Bunker and Bill Hahn. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Kathryn went to St. Ann School and Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights.
She later attended Northwestern University, where she studied theater. After that, she earned a master's degree in drama from Yale University. While at Yale, she acted in plays like Cabaret and The Misanthrope. Before becoming a famous actress, Kathryn worked as a receptionist and a waitress. She also had a lot of experience acting in plays on stage. In 2024, Northwestern University gave Kathryn Hahn an honorary Doctor of Arts degree. She also gave a speech to the graduating class.
Career Highlights
Starting Out in TV and Film (1999–2012)
Kathryn Hahn's first TV appearance was in a children's puppet show called Hickory Hideout in Cleveland. She later met a producer named Tim Kring, who was so impressed by her that he created a special character, Lily Lebowski, just for her in the TV series Crossing Jordan. This show aired from 2001 to 2007.
In 2003, Kathryn had a supporting role in the romantic comedy film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She then appeared in other films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) and Step Brothers (2008). She also made her Broadway debut in 2008 in the play Boeing-Boeing. On TV, she had recurring roles in shows like Hung and Girls. From 2012 to 2015, she was praised for her role as Jennifer Barkley in the comedy series Parks and Recreation.
Becoming a Lead Actress (2013–2017)
In 2013, Kathryn Hahn took on her first main role in the comedy-drama film Afternoon Delight. This movie was shown at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. That same year, she was in the popular movie We're the Millers and co-starred in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
In 2014, Kathryn joined the cast of the TV series Transparent. She played Rabbi Raquel Fein in this show, which was very popular with critics. She received an Emmy nomination for her work on the series. In 2015, she appeared in the science-fiction adventure film Tomorrowland and the horror film The Visit.
A big role for her came in 2016 with the comedy film Bad Moms. Her performance was highly praised, and the movie was a big success. She returned for the sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas, which was released in November 2017. In 2017, Kathryn also wrote her first children's book called My Wish for You.
Recent TV and Voice Roles (2018–Present)
In 2018, Kathryn starred in the drama film Private Life, where her acting received great reviews. She also lent her voice to two animated movies that year. She voiced Ericka Van Helsing in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Dr. Olivia "Liv" Octavius (Doctor Octopus) in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
In 2019, Kathryn starred in and produced the HBO miniseries Mrs. Fletcher, where her performance was highly praised. In 2020, she was in another HBO drama miniseries, I Know This Much Is True. She also began voicing Paige Hunter in the Apple TV+ animated musical comedy series Central Park.
A very popular role for Kathryn came in 2021 when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She played Agnes, a mysterious neighbor who was later revealed to be the powerful witch Agatha Harkness, in the Disney+ series WandaVision. This role earned her many nominations, including an Emmy. Her character's theme song, "Agatha All Along", became very popular online. In 2021, she also starred in The Shrink Next Door on Apple TV+.
In 2022, Kathryn starred in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, a popular mystery film. She also voiced Honey in the animated film Fixed, which was released in 2025. In 2023, she starred as Clare Pierce in the Hulu limited series Tiny Beautiful Things, earning more award nominations.
In 2024, Kathryn reprised her role as Agatha Harkness in the WandaVision spin-off series, Agatha All Along. The episodes were released from September through October 2024. She also voiced Agatha Harkness in the third season of the Disney+ animated series What If...?. In December 2024, she was the guest narrator at the Disneyland Candlelight Processional.
Since 2025, Kathryn Hahn has been starring as Maya Mason in the Apple TV+ comedy series The Studio. She is also set to star in an upcoming sports drama film called Madden.
Personal Life
Kathryn Hahn has been married to actor Ethan Sandler since 2002. They met when they were both studying at Northwestern University. They live in Los Feliz, Los Angeles and have two children.
Kathryn is a strong supporter of equal rights for everyone. She has received the Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign twice for her work. She also cares deeply about animals. As of 2021, her family has two rescue dogs. In September 2024, Kathryn worked with The Dodo to help animals find homes.
