The Story Behind the Saturn Awards
The Saturn Awards were started in 1973 by a person named Donald A. Reed. He felt that movies in the science fiction genre were not getting enough recognition from the big Hollywood award shows.
From Golden Scrolls to Saturn Planet
When the awards first began, winners received a "Golden Scroll" certificate. Later in the 1970s, the award changed to look like the planet Saturn. Its famous rings are made to look like film reels.
Who Decides the Winners?
The winners of the Saturn Awards are chosen by members of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. This Academy is a non-profit group, which means it doesn't aim to make money. Anyone can join this group. Many famous filmmakers are members, including J. J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron.
More Than Just Sci-Fi
Even though the Saturn Awards mostly focus on science fiction, fantasy, and horror, they also honor great work in other types of movies and TV shows. They also give out special awards for people who have had a long and successful career in filmmaking.
