Quasimodo is a famous character from the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. This book was written by Victor Hugo in 1831. Quasimodo was born with a curved back, which made him look different. Because of this, many people in the town were afraid of him.
Despite being feared, Quasimodo found a special kind of love. This love brought him comfort, even though it was only fully realized in death. His story teaches us about kindness and looking beyond appearances.

Who is Quasimodo?
Quasimodo is the main character, or protagonist, of Victor Hugo's novel. He lives in the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. His name comes from "Quasimodo Sunday," which is a Christian holiday.
His Life at Notre Dame
Quasimodo works as the Bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral. This means he is in charge of ringing the huge bells. Because the bells are so loud, he has become deaf. He was adopted by Claude Frollo, a priest at the cathedral. Frollo is like a father figure to Quasimodo.
Quasimodo spends most of his life inside the cathedral. He is often lonely and misunderstood by the outside world. He finds comfort and safety within the old church walls.

- Lon Chaney, Sr. played him in a 1923 film.
- Charles Laughton took on the role in 1939.
- Anthony Quinn played him in 1956.

A Real-Life Inspiration?
In 2010, an interesting discovery was made. A researcher in Britain found some old records. These records suggested there might have been a real-life hunchbacked stone carver. This carver worked at Notre Dame Cathedral around the same time Victor Hugo was writing his novel. It is even possible that Victor Hugo knew this person. This discovery makes Quasimodo's story feel even more real.
