Plot Summary: Peter Parker's Journey to Becoming Spider-Man
Peter Parker's Amazing Transformation
The story begins with Peter Parker, a high school student who is a bit shy. On a school trip to a science lab, he is bitten by a special spider. This bite makes him feel sick, but soon he starts to develop incredible new powers! He becomes super strong, fast, and agile, can stick to walls, and even shoot webs from his wrists.
The Birth of Spider-Man
Peter first tries to use his powers for himself, hoping to earn money. But a sad event changes everything: his beloved Uncle Ben is tragically harmed by a thief Peter could have stopped. This teaches Peter a very important lesson: "With great power comes great responsibility." He decides to use his powers to help others and fight crime, becoming the masked hero known as Spider-Man.
The Green Goblin Appears
Meanwhile, Harry Osborn's father, Norman, is a brilliant scientist and businessman. He tests a special chemical on himself, hoping to make his company, Oscorp, more successful. But the chemical makes him powerful yet also unstable and dangerous. He creates a scary costume and glider, becoming the villainous Green Goblin.
Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin
The Green Goblin starts causing chaos in New York City. Spider-Man steps in to stop him, leading to thrilling battles. The Goblin soon realizes that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and begins to target Peter's loved ones, including his aunt May and his crush, Mary Jane Watson.
A Hero's Tough Choices
In a dramatic showdown, the Green Goblin forces Spider-Man to choose between saving Mary Jane and a tram car full of children. Spider-Man bravely saves everyone. The final fight is intense, and the Green Goblin is defeated by his own weapon. Before he passes away, Norman asks Peter to keep his secret from Harry.
At Norman's funeral, Harry mistakenly blames Spider-Man for his father's passing. Peter, remembering his responsibility to protect those he cares about, decides he cannot be with Mary Jane, even though they have feelings for each other. He knows that being Spider-Man means making tough sacrifices to keep the city safe.

Behind the Scenes: Making the Spider-Man Movie
Bringing Spider-Man to the Big Screen
Making a Spider-Man movie was a dream for many years, starting way back in 1975! It took a long time for the project to finally get started. Many people wanted to direct the film, but in 2000, Sam Raimi was chosen. He was a big fan of the Spider-Man comics, and his passion helped him get the job.
David Koepp wrote the first version of the script. Director Sam Raimi decided to focus the story on the Green Goblin as the main villain, because he found the relationship between Norman Osborn and Peter Parker very interesting. One unique idea in the movie was that Peter shoots organic webs from his wrists, instead of using mechanical web-shooters like in the comics.
Choosing the Actors
Finding the right actor for Peter Parker / Spider-Man was very important. The filmmakers wanted someone who felt like a real person, not just a super-strong hero. Tobey Maguire was Sam Raimi's top choice after seeing him in another movie. Tobey worked hard to get in shape and learn spider-like movements for the role.
Willem Dafoe was chosen to play Norman Osborn / Green Goblin. He was excited to work with Raimi and loved the idea of a comic book movie. Dafoe even insisted on wearing the Green Goblin costume himself to make sure the character's movements felt real.
For the role of Mary Jane Watson, Kirsten Dunst was cast. She was 18 years old when filming began.
Designing the Costumes
The Green Goblin's costume was designed to look like armor. Willem Dafoe wanted it to be flexible so he could perform many of his own movements.
The iconic Spider-Man suit worn by Tobey Maguire took six months to create. It was a single piece, including the mask and boots. Special lenses were made for the eyes, and an alternate suit with a removable mask was used for scenes where Spider-Man takes it off.
Filming Locations and Special Moments
Filming for Spider-Man began in January 2001. Scenes were shot in both Los Angeles and New York City. Some parts of New York, like Times Square and the Queensboro Bridge, were recreated on special sets.
One famous scene shows Mary Jane kissing Peter while he hangs upside down in the rain. This moment became very memorable for fans. Another tricky scene involved Peter catching Mary Jane's food tray. It took 156 tries and 16 hours to get that shot just right, without any special effects!
Amazing Visual Effects
John Dykstra was the visual effects supervisor for the film. He helped Sam Raimi use computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create many of Spider-Man's incredible stunts, like swinging through the city. Raimi wanted these scenes to look like a "ballet in the sky."
Creating a realistic CGI Spider-Man was a big challenge because his face was covered by a mask. The animators had to use a lot of body language to show his emotions. They worked hard to make sure Spider-Man still felt like a human, even when he was a digital character.
Release and Success: Spider-Man's Impact
Movie Marketing
After the events of September 11, 2001, a special Spider-Man poster and trailer were changed. They originally showed the Twin Towers, but these images were removed out of respect.
To promote the movie, Sony partnered with many companies. Restaurants like Hardee's and Carl's Jr. offered Spider-Man cups and toys. Other partners included Dr Pepper, Hershey's, Kellogg's, and Reebok.
Box Office Records
Spider-Man was released in theaters on May 3, 2002, and was an instant hit! It became the number one movie at the box office. In its opening weekend, it earned an incredible $114.8 million, setting a new record for the biggest opening weekend in history. It was the first movie ever to make over $100 million in just one weekend.
The film continued to break records, becoming the fastest movie to reach $200 million and then $300 million. It was the highest-grossing film of 2002 in the US and Canada, earning $407.8 million. Worldwide, Spider-Man grossed $825.8 million, making it the highest-grossing superhero film at the time.
Movie Ratings in the UK
In the United Kingdom, Spider-Man was first given a "12" rating, meaning children under 12 couldn't see it in theaters. However, many people wanted younger kids to be able to watch it with their families. So, the rating was later changed to "12A," which meant children under 12 could watch the film if an adult was with them.
Home Entertainment: Watching Spider-Man at Home
Spider-Man was released on VHS and DVD in November 2002. The DVD was incredibly popular, selling over 7 million copies on its first day! This set a record for the highest single-day DVD sales for a live-action film. By 2004, the movie had earned hundreds of millions of dollars from DVD and VHS sales.
The film was later released on Blu-ray in 2007 and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in 2017. In 2023, the entire Raimi Spider-Man trilogy became available on Disney+.
More Spider-Man Adventures: Sequels and Games
The success of Spider-Man led to two more movies directed by Sam Raimi: Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).
A spin-off animated TV series, Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, aired in 2003. It continued the story from the first film.
A video game based on the movie, also called Spider-Man, was released in 2002 for various gaming consoles. Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe even lent their voices to the game! This game also had sequels that tied into the later movies.
