Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is an exciting upcoming animated superhero movie. It features Miles Morales / Spider-Man, a popular character from Marvel Comics. This film is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. The story was written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and David Callaham.
This movie is the direct follow-up to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). It is also the final part of the amazing Spider-Verse trilogy. Many talented actors lend their voices to the characters. These include Shameik Moore as Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld. Other stars are Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Vélez, and Jake Johnson.
The story picks up right after the thrilling ending of Across the Spider-Verse. Miles is stuck in a different universe and must find a way to save his family. Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation produced this film. Sony Pictures Releasing will distribute it.
Work on a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse began even before the first movie came out in 2018. The original plan for the sequel grew too big for one film. So, it was split into two parts: Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse. Both parts were worked on at the same time.
Beyond the Spider-Verse was first set for release in March 2024. However, the team focused on finishing Across the Spider-Verse first. The script and animation for the films were changed a lot. Also, a strike by actors in 2023 paused production and caused delays. After the second movie was released and the strike ended, work on Beyond the Spider-Verse started again in December 2023. The writers and directors were announced later. A new release date was set in March 2025.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is planned to be released in the United States on June 18, 2027.

Making the Movie
How the Idea Developed
Work on a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse began in 2018. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were the producers. They had a big story idea for the sequel. It included the villain the Spot. The story became too big for one movie. So, they decided to split it into two parts in 2021. These parts became Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Both films were worked on at the same time. The second part was first planned for 2023. Then, its release date moved to March 29, 2024. This happened when the first part's release was also moved. The films were officially renamed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Some parts of the third film's story were put on hold. This allowed the team to focus on finishing the second movie. The March 2024 release date for Beyond the Spider-Verse seemed too soon. The movie had many technical parts and high expectations. So, a later release, possibly in 2026 or 2027, was expected. In June 2022, Sony announced that the Spot would be the main villain in both films.
In May 2023, Phil Miller mentioned that the beginning and end of Beyond the Spider-Verse were clear. However, the middle part was still being worked on. After Across the Spider-Verse came out, Lord and Miller confirmed this film would end the trilogy. It would also complete Miles Morales's story. They explained that making the film perfect would take time. They would not rush it for a specific release date.
In July 2023, Sony removed Beyond the Spider-Verse from its schedule. This was because of a strike by actors. The strike stopped voice actors from recording their lines. After the strike ended in November, voice recording was set to restart. Production for the film resumed in December 2023.
In June 2024, composer Daniel Pemberton said the team was working hard. He felt pressure to make the ending great. He wanted to avoid mistakes seen in other third movies. Karan Soni, who voices Pavitr Prabhakar, said in August 2024 that voice recording would begin soon. He confirmed the film was deep in production. In September, it was reported that the film might not be released until 2027. This was to give animators more time.
Bob Persichetti and Thompson were confirmed as directors in December 2024. Jinko Gotoh joined as a producer. Lord and Miller wrote the script with David Callaham. Persichetti co-directed Into the Spider-Verse. Thompson was a production designer on the first film and co-director of the second. In March 2025, the new release date of June 4, 2027, was announced. This date was later adjusted to June 18, 2027.
In February 2026, Sony Pictures Animation leaders said Lord and Miller gave frequent feedback. This helped reduce changes needed later in animation. Lord and Miller wanted to make the film even better than the previous ones. They said delays happened because they had to rebuild parts of the film. In March 2026, they confirmed the film was on track for its June 2027 release. They were focused on making small improvements.
Writing the Story
Lord and Miller called Beyond the Spider-Verse the most emotional film in the trilogy. They described it as a "massive finale." It will give a satisfying end to the story. Lord explained that the film starts right after Across the Spider-Verse. Miles is trapped in Earth-42. He feels betrayed. The story will show how love from his friends helps him grow.
Miles is on the run from other Spider-People. He might not be able to rely on friends like Gwen. He needs to save his family. The writers found a key theme for the middle of the story. It asks: "When your family is broken apart by your calling, how do you put them back together?"
Voice Acting and Recording
Many actors are returning to voice their characters. These include Shameik Moore as Miles Morales. Hailee Steinfeld is Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen. Karan Soni plays Pavitr Prabhakar / Spider-Man India. Jason Schwartzman returns as the Spot. Daniel Kaluuya is Hobie Brown / Spider-Punk. Nicolas Cage voices Spider-Man Noir. Jake Johnson is Peter B. Parker. John Mulaney plays Peter Porker / Spider-Ham. Kimiko Glenn is Peni Parker. Brian Tyree Henry is Jefferson Morales. Lauren Vélez is Rio Morales. Jharrel Jerome voices the Earth-42 Miles G. Morales / Prowler. Marvin Jones III is Lonnie Lincoln / Tombstone. Greta Lee plays the AI assistant Lyla.
Voice recording was delayed by the actors' strike in July 2023. It was set to restart in November after the strike ended. Karan Soni said in August 2024 that recording would begin in a few months. Jharrel Jerome mentioned in January 2025 that recording had not yet started. Hailee Steinfeld began some recordings by April 2025. Moore and Jerome were recording their lines by August 2025. Johnson had been recording his lines for several months by March 2026. Lee recorded her lines alongside Across the Spider-Verse.
Animation and Visuals
Beyond the Spider-Verse will have many different animation styles. This will be even more varied than the first two films. Sony Pictures Imageworks is creating the art and designs. Mike Andrews is the lead editor again. Cinematographer Alice Brooks also worked on the film. She brought new ways to direct the camera.
The team used the Unreal Engine and a virtual camera. This helped them plan out scenes. Lord and Miller said the film would have amazing, abstract portal scenes for the Spot. The movie is designed to fit IMAX screens. They are focusing on every small detail. They want to do something completely new.
Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra talked about using artificial intelligence (AI) in films. Miller clarified that Beyond the Spider-Verse would not use generative AI. This type of AI creates new content. He explained that the goal is unique visual styles. They do not want to reuse other artists' work with AI. Some machine learning technology was used to help animators. This was based on work already done for the films.
Music for the Movie
Daniel Pemberton, who composed music for the first two films, returned in June 2024. He focused on connecting the music for Beyond the Spider-Verse. This helps all three films feel like one story.
Promoting the Film
Lord, Persichetti, and Thompson showed the first footage in March 2025. It showed Miles saying he would do things "his way." He was tired of others telling him what to do. This footage suggested Miles would face a big personal challenge. Sony also released five pictures online. These showed Miles, Gwen, and the Earth-42 Prowler. Fans felt these pictures made the wait easier. The footage showed how the film was changing animation again.
In April 2026, new footage was shown at CinemaCon. Sony then released four more pictures online. Writers described the footage as "explosive." They said the "striking" visual styles would make the long wait worthwhile.
When and How to Watch
In Theaters
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters. Sony Pictures Releasing will launch it in the United States on June 18, 2027. It will be shown in IMAX and other special large screens. This is the first Sony animated film to do so. The film will use a special screen size for IMAX.
The movie was first set for March 29, 2024. But it was removed from the schedule in July 2023. This was due to production delays and the actors' strike. In March 2025, a new date of June 4, 2027, was announced. This was later moved to June 25, 2027. It was then moved up to June 18, 2027, for the Father's Day weekend.
Watching at Home
In April 2021, Sony made deals with Netflix and Disney. These deals gave them rights to Sony films from 2022 to 2026. Netflix got the first chance to stream the movies. This "pay 1 window" usually lasts about 18 months. It included the Spider-Verse sequels. This built on an older deal Netflix had with Sony Pictures Animation.
Disney got the "pay 2 window" rights. This means films would stream on Disney+ and Hulu. They would also be shown on Disney's TV channels. In January 2026, Sony and Netflix announced a new deal. Netflix now has global "pay 1 window" rights. This new agreement will fully start in early 2029.
