Jesse's Life and Music Journey
Early Life and First Band
Jesse Carmichael was born in Boulder, Colorado, United States. He started playing piano when he was very young. His father, Bob, gave him his own keyboard at age seven. Jesse first learned songs by famous composers like Mozart and Bach. These composers still inspire him today.
Jesse began learning guitar in the seventh grade. His older sister gave him a guitar for Christmas. At that time, he really liked Grunge music.
Later that year, Jesse's family moved. Jesse started attending Brentwood School in Los Angeles. There, he met Adam Levine, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick. They introduced him to classic rock bands like The Beatles and The Kinks. Soon after, the four friends started a band called Kara's Flowers.
They quickly looked for a record company to release their music. After putting out their own album called We Like Digging?, the band signed with Reprise Records. In 1997, they released their first studio album, The Fourth World. Even with help from producer Rob Cavallo, the album did not sell well. The band was soon dropped from the record company.
After The Fourth World didn't succeed, the band slowed down. Jesse and Adam Levine went to Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York. While in college, Jesse focused more on playing keyboards again. After just one semester, they both left college. They returned to California with new musical ideas.
Joining Maroon 5
On March 9, 2012, Jesse Carmichael announced he would take a break from Maroon 5. He wanted to focus on studying music and "healing arts." During his break, the band's touring keyboardist, PJ Morton, became an official member. PJ took over Jesse's keyboard duties.
However, on October 10, 2012, Jesse confirmed he would return to the band. He rejoined after Maroon 5 finished their Overexposed World Tour. With PJ Morton also staying, the band grew to six members. Jesse returned in time to record their fifth studio album, V, released in 2014. After coming back, he started playing guitar more often in the band. This was partly because he played it a lot during his break. It was also because PJ Morton and longtime friend Sam Farrar had joined the band.
Jesse's Personal Life
On July 27, 2018, Jesse and his fiancé (now wife) Tara welcomed their first son. Their second son was born on August 19, 2020.
Jesse Carmichael was Adam Levine's best man at his wedding in 2014.
Jesse loves to learn more about music. He attended Santa Monica College from 2001 to 2002, and again in 2005. Today, he still takes lessons from many teachers. He learns more about playing piano and guitar, and also about singing. He also takes lessons in how to arrange music for different instruments.
Other Music Projects
In 2016, Jesse Carmichael teamed up with musician and producer Jason Lader. They formed a side project called Circuit Jerks. The group released a short album called EP1 on September 9, 2016. Jesse also released a solo album under the name "1863." He chose this name because it was the year Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
