Story of Hoot

Roy A. Eberhardt (Logan Lerman) is a middle school student. He and his parents (Neil Flynn and Kiersten Warren) have just moved to Coconut Cove, Florida. They came from Montana. At his new school, Roy is picked on by a bully named Dana Matherson. One day, while trying to get away from Dana on the school bus, Roy accidentally breaks Dana's nose.

Because of this, Roy cannot ride the school bus for three days. He also has to write an apology letter to Dana. Slowly, Roy becomes friends with Beatrice "The Bear" Leep (Brie Larson). He also meets her stepbrother, "Mullet Fingers" (Cody Linley).

Meanwhile, someone is causing trouble at a construction site. A new "Mother Paula's Pancake House" restaurant is going to be built there. Chuck Muckle (Clark Gregg), the manager, is in charge of the project. Officer David Delinko (Luke Wilson) parks his police car at the site to catch the person causing trouble. But Delinko falls asleep. The prankster then spray-paints the car windows black. The next day, Roy and his parents read about the spray-painted car. The police chief gives Delinko a small police scooter to use instead.

Soon, Roy learns that the pancake house will be built where burrowing owls live. To build there, the owls would have to be moved or harmed. Mullet Fingers has been secretly playing pranks to stop the building. He was the one who spray-painted Delinko's car. Beatrice tells Roy about their secret plan when Mullet Fingers gets bitten by guard dogs. Roy decides to join them to save the owls. Leroy "Curly" Branitt (Tim Blake Nelson) is the construction foreman. He tries to keep the building on schedule, even with the owls there. He gets yelled at daily by Muckle.

The three friends tell Officer Delinko and the whole town about the burrowing owls. They get everyone to be quiet so the owls can come out. Muckle is then arrested by Delinko. Kimberly (Jessica Cauffiel), the actress who plays Mother Paula, offers to turn the site into an owl preserve. She also publicly fires Muckle.

Roy's parents decide to stay in Florida. Officer Delinko gets promoted to detective. He even gets a new unmarked police car. Dana, the bully, is sent to military school. Muckle has to do community service. The land is given to the owls and becomes an animal sanctuary. Curly and Kimberly leave Mother Paula's Pancake House to raise dogs. Roy stays good friends with Beatrice and Mullet Fingers.
