Robert Clark Gregg Jr. (born April 2, 1962) is an American actor, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for playing Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared as Coulson in many movies and TV shows from 2008 to 2024. He also voiced the character in animated series and video games.

Gregg also played FBI Special Agent Mike Casper on the TV show The West Wing (2001–2004). He was also Richard, the ex-husband of Christine Campbell, in the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006–2010).

He wrote the movie What Lies Beneath (2000). He also wrote and directed the films Choke (2008) and Trust Me (2013). He has appeared in many other movies like 500 Days of Summer (2009) and Being the Ricardos (2021).

Clark Gregg's Early Life

Clark Gregg was born on April 2, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was a professor at Stanford University. His family moved often, and he lived in seven different cities by the time he was 17. He went to high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

He studied at Ohio Wesleyan University for two years. Then he moved to Manhattan and worked different jobs. He was a bar back, a security guard, and a parking valet. Later, he went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He studied drama and English there and graduated in 1986.

Clark Gregg was one of the people who started the Atlantic Theater Company. This is an off-Broadway theater group that began in 1983. He was also its artistic director for a time.

He has had many supporting roles in movies. These include Lovely & Amazing and In Good Company. He also made guest appearances on TV shows like Will & Grace and The West Wing. In 2000, he wrote the script for the thriller movie What Lies Beneath.

Directing and Writing Films

Gregg directed and wrote the 2008 film Choke. This movie was based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. It starred Sam Rockwell. In 2013, his film Trust Me premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Gregg wrote, produced, and directed this movie. It was released in the United States in June 2014.

Becoming Agent Coulson in Marvel

In 2008, Gregg appeared in the movie Iron Man. He played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson. S.H.I.E.L.D. is a secret organization that protects the world. He played Agent Coulson again in Iron Man 2 (2010) and Thor (2011).

Gregg signed a deal to play Coulson in many Marvel movies. He was excited to be part of the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said that Agent Coulson was not a big character in the comic books. He felt lucky that Marvel decided to make the character more important. He returned as Coulson in The Avengers (2012). Gregg also starred in short films called Marvel One-Shots. These films focused on his character.

From 2013 to 2020, Gregg played Agent Phil Coulson in the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. This show is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He even directed some episodes in seasons five and six. In 2019, he played Agent Coulson again in the movie Captain Marvel. He also voiced Coulson in the animated series What If...? in 2021 and 2024.

Recent TV Roles

In 2022, Gregg joined the TV series Snowpiercer for its fourth and final season. This season aired in 2024 on AMC. He also appeared in the miniseries Florida Man and Painkiller in 2023. In 2024, he had a recurring role in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Clark Gregg married actress Jennifer Grey on July 21, 2001. They worked together in the TV movie Road to Christmas. They have a daughter named Stella, who was born on December 3, 2001.

Gregg and Grey were part of the 2017 Women's March in Washington, D.C. On July 3, 2020, they announced they had separated. Their divorce was finalized on February 16, 2021.

Gregg has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He is also a cousin of Kathryn Garcia, a government official from New York.

Awards and Recognition

Clark Gregg has won several awards for his work. In 2000, he won a National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble for the movie State and Main. He also won a Florida Film Critics Circle Award for Best Ensemble Cast for the same film in 2001.

In 2006, he received a Women's Image Network Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The New Adventures of Old Christine. His film Choke won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008 for its ensemble cast. In 2013, he won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Avengers.
