Robert Clark Gregg Jr. (born April 2, 1962) is an American actor, director, and writer. He is most famous for playing Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes movies and TV shows from 2008 to 2024.
Gregg also lent his voice to Coulson in the cartoon series Ultimate Spider-Man. He voiced the character in video games too, like Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Marvel's Avengers.
Besides Marvel, he was known as FBI Special Agent Mike Casper in the TV show The West Wing. He also played Richard in the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine. Richard was the ex-husband of Christine Campbell.
Clark Gregg has also written and directed movies. He wrote the thriller What Lies Beneath (2000). He also wrote and directed the comedy Choke (2008) and the drama Trust Me (2013).

Early life
Clark Gregg was born on April 2, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was a priest and a professor. Because his family moved often, he lived in seven different cities by the time he was 17.
He went to high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His father taught at Duke University nearby. Clark Gregg studied at Ohio Wesleyan University for two years. Then he moved to Manhattan.
In New York, he worked many different jobs. He was a bar back, a security guard at the Guggenheim Museum, and a parking valet. Later, he went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He studied drama and English there and graduated in 1986.
Career

Clark Gregg helped start the off-Broadway Atlantic Theater Company in 1983. He later became its artistic director. He has played many supporting roles in movies. Some of these include Lovely & Amazing and In Good Company.
He also appeared as a guest on TV shows like Will & Grace and Sex and the City. In 2000, he wrote the movie script for the thriller What Lies Beneath.
In 2008, Gregg directed and wrote the film Choke. It was based on a book by Chuck Palahniuk. The movie starred Sam Rockwell.
A big part of his career started in 2008. He appeared in the movie Iron Man as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson. He played Agent Coulson again in Iron Man 2 in 2010. Clark Gregg signed a deal to play the character in many Marvel movies.
In 2011, he returned as Coulson for Thor. He was excited to be part of the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said Agent Coulson was a small role at first. But he was lucky they decided to make the character bigger.
He played Coulson again in The Avengers. Gregg also starred in short Marvel films about his character. You can find these on the Blu-ray versions of the movies.
From 2013 to 2020, Gregg played Agent Phil Coulson in the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. This show is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He even directed some episodes in seasons five and six.
In 2013, his film Trust Me premiered. He wrote, produced, and directed this movie. It was released in the United States in 2014.
Gregg played Agent Coulson again in the 2019 movie Captain Marvel. He also voiced Coulson in the animated series What If...? in 2021.
In 2022, he joined the TV series Snowpiercer for its fourth season. This season aired in 2024.
Personal life
Clark Gregg married actress Jennifer Grey on July 21, 2001. They worked together in the TV movie Road to Christmas. They have a daughter named Stella, born in 2001.
Gregg and Grey separated in January 2020. Their divorce was finalized in February 2021.
Clark Gregg has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This is a type of martial art. He is also a cousin of New York government official Kathryn Garcia.
