Stephen Samuel Wrabel (born January 7, 1989), known simply as Wrabel, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He is based in Los Angeles and is well-known for his powerful songs and piano skills.

Wrabel's Journey in Music

Wrabel grew up and went to high school in Houston, Texas. After high school, he studied music at the Berklee College of Music. However, he soon moved to Los Angeles to focus on writing songs. His first big step in the music world was when he signed with Pulse Recording as a songwriter.

Early Career and First Songs

In 2010, Wrabel recorded "Get Up," which became the theme song for the NBC game show Minute to Win It. This was an early success for him.

In 2012, Wrabel signed a record deal with Island Def Jam. This was a big moment, showing that important people in the music industry believed in his talent.

Big Hits and Popular Songs

In 2014, a Dutch DJ named Afrojack released a version of Wrabel's song "Ten Feet Tall". This song became a hit around the world. It was even played during the Super Bowl XLVIII in a Bud Light commercial, reaching about 100 million viewers! Wrabel later released his own piano version of the song.

On June 24, 2016, Wrabel released his single "11 Blocks." The famous singer Kesha strongly supported and promoted this song. He also released both a lyric video and a music video for it. He followed up with another single, "Bloodstain," in March 2017. In May 2017, he released an EP (a shorter album) called We Could Be Beautiful.

Music with a Message

In July 2017, Wrabel released a very special song called "The Village." This song was written to support transgender people. The music video for "The Village" shows a teenage trans boy dealing with his family. The lyrics talk about the challenges of being transgender and part of the LGBT community. The video ends with the important message "#trans_rights_are_human_rights." Wrabel wrote this song after some protections for trans students were removed in schools. He quickly released the video when there was news about banning transgender individuals from the military.

Achievements and Recognition

Wrabel has received many compliments and awards for his music and his messages.

In April 2019, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, singer Pink praised Wrabel and his video for "The Village." She said the song would "break your heart into many little tiny pieces."

Billboard magazine named Wrabel their Pride Artist of the Month in August 2019. They noted that he had been working with big names like Kesha and Adam Lambert for a decade. They also said he was ready for his big breakthrough as a solo artist.

People magazine called Wrabel "One to Watch" in October 2019. They highlighted how he moved from working behind the scenes to becoming a pop star.

In September 2019, The Huffington Post called Wrabel "One of pop's unsung talents." They mentioned that Pink's praise on The Ellen DeGeneres Show was a much-needed recognition of his talent.

Wrabel was also named to the OUT100 list in 2017. He was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Artist.

Nylon magazine described Wrabel's first EP, Sideways, as having the soulful sound of artists like Sia or Sam Smith. They also said its pop melodies reminded them of icons like Paul Simon.

BuzzFeed named Wrabel's song "I Want You" one of "The Most Criminally Underrated Pop Songs of 2015."

Wrabel's Songs in TV Shows

Wrabel's music has been featured in several popular TV shows:

  • In 2016, his song "Sideways" was used in the final episode of the first season of Quantico.
  • In 2017, "We Could Be Beautiful" appeared in the TV show Dynasty. It was also featured in the Hulu series Love, Victor in 2020.
  • In 2023, the song "On the Way Down" was heard in an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Personal Life and Advocacy

Wrabel is a strong supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. He uses his music to share important messages and support his community.

His song "11 Blocks" is about his own feelings. It describes his first love who moved just 11 blocks away from him. The music video for his song "Bloodstain" shows the pain and sadness that can happen in a relationship.

The music video for his 2017 song "The Village" tells the story of a trans teenager. It shows the struggles of gender dysphoria and dealing with family members who might not understand. The video includes a message: "In nature, a flock will attack any bird that is more colorful than the others because being different is seen as a threat." It ends with "Dedicated to all the colorful birds" and the hashtag "#TransRightsAreHumanRights." Wrabel has said that this song is "the most important thing to me that I have ever done."
