Laura Marie Marano (born November 29, 1995) is an American actress and singer. She is famous for playing Ally Dawson in the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally. Laura was also one of the first students on the game show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?.
She had important roles in TV shows like Without a Trace and Back to You. Laura has also starred in movies such as A Sort of Homecoming, the Disney Channel Original Movie Bad Hair Day, and the Netflix films The Perfect Date and Choose Love. In 2015, she started her music career by signing with Big Machine Records. She released her first song, "Boombox", in 2016.

Her Early Life
Laura Marano was born in Los Angeles, California. Her dad, Damiano Marano, is a college professor. Her mom, Ellen Marano, used to be an actress and owns a children's theater. Laura's dad has Italian family roots.
Laura first got into acting at her mom's theater. When she was five, she and her older sister, Vanessa Marano, who is also an actress, wanted to act professionally. Laura started learning to play the piano when she was nine.
Even when she was busy with Austin & Ally, Laura went to a regular high school. She didn't do school on set. She said her friends at school were very supportive. In 2015, Laura went to the University of Southern California. She studied Philosophy, Politics, and Law.
Her Acting Journey
Laura's first acting job was at age five. She worked in many plays at the Stage Door Theater. She also appeared in commercials and had small parts in shows like Ghost Whisperer and Heroes.
She played a younger version of Keira Knightley's character in the movie The Jacket. Laura was a regular on the game show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?. She also played Gracie Carr in the sitcom Back to You.
Starring in Austin & Ally
In 2011, Laura Marano got a big role as Ally Dawson in the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally. The show was very popular. In 2013, she sang four solo songs and one duet with Ross Lynch for the show's soundtrack, Austin & Ally: Turn It Up. Her song "Me and You" was very popular, reaching number six on the Billboard Kid Digital Songs chart.
She also sang "I Love Christmas" with Ross Lynch for a Disney Channel holiday album. In 2014, Laura lent her voice to characters in cartoons like Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja and Fish Hooks. She also appeared in a music video for "Somebody to You" by The Vamps and Demi Lovato.
In March 2015, Laura signed a music deal with Big Machine Records. That same year, she starred in the Disney Channel movie Bad Hair Day. She also played a young Amy in the movie A Sort of Homecoming. Austin & Ally finished after four seasons in January 2016.
Radio Show and More Films
On January 13, 2016, Laura started her own radio show on Radio Disney. It was called For the Record with Laura Marano. The show talked about her music career and featured interviews with other stars. Guests included Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande.
Her Music Career
On March 11, 2016, Laura released her first song, "Boombox". The music video came out in April and quickly got millions of views. It featured actor Ken Jeong. Laura performed "Boombox" at the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards. She also sang it on the Today show.
Her second song, "La La", was released in August 2016. Later that year, Big Machine Records stopped working with most of their pop artists. In 2017, Laura signed with Warner Bros. Records. However, they parted ways in 2018.
Becoming an Independent Artist
On October 1, 2018, Laura announced she would release new music on her own. She started her own music label called Flip Phone Records. She chose this name because she is known for still using a flip phone! On October 5, 2018, she released the song "Me".
In 2019, she released "Let Me Cry" and "F.E.O.U.". She also performed at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. On March 8, 2019, she released her first collection of songs, called an EP, named Me. It included new songs and a remix.
Laura also sang "A Little Closer" for the Netflix movie The Perfect Date, where she also acted. She released a Christmas song, "Me and the Mistletoe", and the soundtrack for A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish.
Recent Music and Tours
In 2020, Laura released more songs like "When You Wake Up" and "Can't Hold On Forever". She also released remixes of these songs. In August 2020, she released "Honest With You". She announced her second EP, You, which came out in October 2020.
Laura also started her first virtual tour, The YOU Tour, in October 2020. In 2021, she released an acoustic version and a remix of "Something To Believe In". She also released remixes of "Honest With You" and "Can't Help Myself".
In September 2021, she released "I Wanna Know What It's Like". On December 31, 2021, she released "Dance With You" with the group Grey. In January 2022, she released "Worst Kind of Hurt" with Wrabel. These songs were part of the soundtrack for the Netflix movie The Royal Treatment, which Laura also starred in.
In March 2022, Laura announced her first national concert tour, The Us Tour. It had 22 shows across the United States. She played piano and sang with her band. Later that month, it was announced she would star in the Netflix interactive movie Choose Love.
On July 31, 2023, Laura announced her first full album, I May Be An Actress, but I Can't Fake How I Feel. It was released on September 15, 2023, and was well-received by many.
Helping Others
Laura Marano also uses her fame to help others. In August 2013, she became an ambassador for UNICEF's Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign. This program encourages kids to collect money on Halloween to help children around the world. Laura said it was a fun way for kids to learn about global issues and help less fortunate children.
In August 2014, she was an ambassador for a Disney and Birds Eye Vegetables campaign. This campaign aimed to encourage kids in the United States to eat more healthy foods like vegetables. In April 2019, Laura hosted a fashion show to support Childhelp, an organization that helps children.
