Duncan Laurence's Music Journey
Early Life and Start in Music

Duncan Laurence grew up in a town called Hellevoetsluis in the Netherlands. When he was a teenager, he started writing his own songs. This helped him deal with being bullied. He studied music at the Rock Academy in Tilburg. There, he played in several bands, including his own band called The Slick and Suited. This band even performed at a music festival called Eurosonic Noorderslag. Duncan has a motor disorder that affects his right hand. This is because he had a lack of oxygen when he was born.
Joining The Voice and Other Work
In 2014, Duncan joined the fifth season of The Voice of Holland. He chose singer Ilse DeLange as his coach. He did very well and made it to the semi-finals before leaving the show. After The Voice, Duncan continued to work on his music. In 2017, he finished his studies at the Rock Academy. He also helped write a song called "Closer" for the K-pop group TVXQ. This song was part of their 2018 album.
Winning Eurovision and Global Success
In January 2019, Duncan was chosen to represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. The contest was held in Tel Aviv, Israel. His song, "Arcade", was released in March 2019. Many people thought he would win, and he did! He received 498 points. This made him the fifth Dutch winner of Eurovision. The last time the Netherlands won was in 1975.
Because the next year's contest was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duncan held the title of Eurovision winner for two years. After his big win, Duncan went on a concert tour. He performed in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe. In 2019, he performed at the Pinkpop Festival. He also signed a record deal with Capitol Records.
In 2020, Duncan released his first collection of songs, an extended play (EP) called Worlds on Fire. It included "Arcade" and other songs. His first full album, Small Town Boy, came out in November 2020. It quickly became very popular in the Netherlands.
In late 2020, "Arcade" became super popular on TikTok. This made the song climb music charts again. In 2021, "Arcade" became the most-streamed Eurovision song on Spotify. It even reached the top 40 in the UK Singles Chart. Duncan performed "Arcade" on TV shows in the US, like Today and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The song then entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the first Eurovision song in 25 years to do so!
At the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, Duncan opened the show. He was also given an award for "Arcade" reaching one billion streams. Sadly, he tested positive for COVID-19. This meant he couldn't perform live in the grand final. Instead, a video of his performance was shown.
New Music and Coaching (2022–Present)
In 2022, Duncan became a coach on The Voice Kids Belgium. A singer from his team, Karista, won the show.
On August 3, 2022, Duncan released "Electric Life". This was the first song from his second album, Skyboy. He also released a song with Rosa Linn called "WDIA (Would Do It Again)". Other songs from the album include "I Want It All" and "Skyboy". Duncan also helped write the song "Burning Daylight". This was the song for the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. He also performed a cover of "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the Eurovision 2023 final.
His album Skyboy was released on September 22, 2023. Critics liked the album, saying it had a lot of different styles.
