Kate Garry Hudson (born April 19, 1979) is an American actress and singer. She is known for her roles in many movies and TV shows. Kate is the daughter of famous actress Goldie Hawn and singer Bill Hudson.
She first appeared in a film in 1998. Kate became very well-known for playing Penny Lane in the movie Almost Famous (2000). For this role, she won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Oscar.
Throughout the 2000s, Kate starred in popular romantic comedies. These include How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), You, Me and Dupree (2006), and Bride Wars (2009). She also had a role in the TV series Glee (2012–2013). More recently, she appeared in Truth Be Told (2022) and Running Point (2025).
Besides acting, Kate Hudson co-founded the fitness brand Fabletics. She has also written two non-fiction books. In 2024, she released her first music album, Glorious.

Kate Hudson was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 19, 1979. Her mother is the Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn. Her father is Bill Hudson, an actor, comedian, and musician.
Kate's parents divorced when she was very young. She and her older brother, actor Oliver Hudson, grew up with their mother. They were also raised by her mother's longtime partner, actor Kurt Russell. Kate considers Kurt Russell her father.
Her family background includes Italian, Hungarian Jewish, English, and German roots. Kate was raised Jewish and also practices Buddhism.
She has four half-siblings from her biological father's other relationships. She also has a half-brother, Wyatt Russell, from her mother's relationship with Kurt Russell. In 1997, Kate graduated from Crossroads in Santa Monica. She chose to become an actress instead of going to New York University.
Acting Career
Early Roles and Breakthrough
Kate Hudson started acting on stage at age 11. Her first movie was Desert Blue in 1998. She then appeared in the romantic comedy 200 Cigarettes (1999). In 2000, she had roles in movies like Gossip and Dr. T & the Women.
Her big break came with the movie Almost Famous (2000). She played Penny Lane, a character inspired by real-life groupies. Kate worked hard for this role. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. Entertainment Weekly praised her role, calling it "incomparable."
Romantic Comedies and Thrillers
In 2002, Kate starred in The Four Feathers. Her next film was the romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003). She played a writer trying to make a guy break up with her. This movie was a big success, earning over $100 million.
She also appeared in Le Divorce (2003) and Alex & Emma (2003). In 2004, she starred in Raising Helen, playing a young woman who becomes a guardian to her sister's children.
In 2005, Kate took on a different role in the thriller The Skeleton Key. She played a nurse in a mysterious New Orleans home. The film was a hit, making over $91.9 million worldwide. In 2006, she starred in the comedy You, Me and Dupree, which also did well at the box office.
In 2007, Kate directed a short film called Cutlass. She reunited with Matthew McConaughey for the romantic comedy Fool's Gold (2008). For this movie, she learned scuba diving. The film earned $111.2 million worldwide. She also starred in My Best Friend's Girl (2008).

Music Career
Kate Hudson signed a record deal with Virgin Music Group. She released her first song, "Talk About Love," in January 2024. She wrote this song with her fiancé, Danny Fujikawa, and Linda Perry.
She released another song, "Live Forever," in March 2024. Rolling Stone magazine called it "a love letter to parents." Her debut album, Glorious, was released on May 17, 2024. In August 2024, she released a cover of the song "Voices Carry."
Other Projects
In 2013, Kate Hudson launched her own line of workout clothes called Fabletics. She partnered with TechStyle Fashion Group for this brand. Fabletics now has many stores across the United States. Kate has said she spends more time working on Fabletics than on movies.
Kate has also written two non-fiction books. Her first book, Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body, came out in 2016. Her second book, Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition, was released in 2017.
In 2018, Kate partnered with New York & Company for a fashion line. She also worked with her mother, Goldie Hawn, on a special clothing collection. Part of the money from this collection helps the MindUP program. In 2019, Kate launched her own vodka brand, King St. Vodka. She also hosts a podcast called Sibling Revelry with her brother Oliver.
Personal Life

Kate Hudson was married to Chris Robinson, the lead singer of the Black Crowes. They married on December 31, 2000. Their son was born in January 2004. They separated in 2006, and their divorce was finalized in 2007.
In 2010, Kate started dating Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy. They got engaged in April 2011, and their son was born three months later. They broke up in 2014 but remain friendly.
In December 2016, Kate began dating Danny Fujikawa, a musician and actor. They met through her best friends. Their daughter was born in October 2018. They announced their engagement in September 2021.
Kate has been friends with musician Adam Levine since they were teenagers. In 2006, Kate sued a British newspaper for reporting that she had an eating disorder. She said the report was false and worried about its effect on young women. The newspaper apologized and paid her. Kate has shared that transcendental meditation has been very helpful in her life.
