Derek Dixie grew up in a city called Youngstown, Ohio. He went to Youngstown State University to study. After that, he graduated from The Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio. This school teaches people how to work with sound and music. Later, Derek even taught audio engineering at The Recording Workshop.

Starting with "Making His Band"
In 2009, Derek Dixie was one of the top 42 people chosen for an MTV show. The show was called "Making His Band." It was about Sean "Diddy" Combs looking for a band. He wanted a band to play music for his new album.
Rocking the Super Bowl Stage
Derek Dixie has been a music director for some huge events. He was the music director for Beyoncé's solo Superbowl half time show in 2013. He also worked on the Super Bowl halftime show again in 2016. That year, Beyoncé shared the stage with Coldplay and Bruno Mars.
In 2019, Derek helped Chloe x Halle perform for Super Bowl LIII. He arranged the music for them. Thirty musicians from Youngstown State University played with them. A group of horn and string players from Los Angeles also joined in.
