Chloe x Halle are an R&B music duo made up of sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey. They started their careers young, acting in small roles. In 2012, they moved from Georgia to Los Angeles.

The sisters began sharing music covers on YouTube. Soon, superstar Beyoncé noticed them. She became their mentor and signed them to her music company, Parkwood Entertainment. They then released their first EP, Sugar Symphony (2016), and a mixtape, The Two of Us (2017).

Chloe x Halle became even more famous after appearing in the TV show Grown-ish (2018–2022). They also released their first album, The Kids Are Alright (2018). This album earned them two Grammy Award nominations, including one for Best New Artist. In 2020, they released their second album, Ungodly Hour. This album was highly praised and got them three more Grammy nominations. Their song "Do It" from the album was their first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

How Chloe and Halle Started

Chloe Elizabeth Bailey was born on July 1, 1998, and Halle Lynn Bailey on March 27, 2000. They grew up in Mableton, Georgia, with their parents. In 2012, their family moved to Los Angeles.

When they were younger, they had small acting parts in movies. Chloe was in The Fighting Temptations (2003) with Beyoncé. Both sisters were in the Disney Channel movie Let It Shine (2012). Their dad taught them how to write songs when Chloe was ten and Halle was eight.

YouTube Fame and Beyoncé's Discovery

Chloe and Halle started a YouTube channel when they were 13 and 11. They posted covers of popular songs. Their first video was a cover of Beyoncé's "Best Thing I Never Had". They began performing as Chloe x Halle on this channel.

In April 2012, they appeared on The Ellen Show. Later that year, they won The Next Big Thing from Radio Disney. In 2013, they had a small role in the Disney show Austin & Ally.

Their cover of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" in December 2013 became very popular. Beyoncé herself saw it! In 2015, she signed the sisters to her company, Parkwood Entertainment. They even appeared in Beyoncé's visual album Beyoncé: Lemonade (2016).

First Albums and TV Show Success

Sugar Symphony and The Two of Us

Chloe x Halle released their first official music, an EP called Sugar Symphony, on April 29, 2016. It came out through Parkwood Entertainment. They released their first single, "Drop," in April, followed by "Fall" in September.

They performed "Fall" and other songs at the White House Easter Egg Roll. Michelle Obama introduced them! They also opened for Beyoncé on the European part of her The Formation World Tour.

In 2017, Chloe x Halle released their mixtape, The Two of Us. They wrote and produced most of the songs themselves. Rolling Stone magazine even put it on their list of Best R&B Albums of 2017. They also sang the U.S. National Anthem at the 2017 NFL Draft.

Joining Grown-ish and The Kids Are Alright

In December 2017, Chloe x Halle released "Grown," the theme song for the TV series Grown-ish. They started with small roles on the show but became main characters for the second season. Their song "The Kids Are Alright" was also in the first episode. They starred in the show for four seasons.

Both "Grown" and "The Kids Are Alright" were singles from their first studio album, The Kids Are Alright. The album was released on March 23, 2018, and got great reviews. Their song "Warrior" was featured in the movie A Wrinkle in Time (2018) and on their album.

Halle's Role in The Little Mermaid

In July 2019, Disney announced that Halle Bailey would play Princess Ariel in the live-action movie The Little Mermaid. She would also sing songs for the film's soundtrack. Some people had different opinions about this casting, but Disney defended their choice.

Their Unique Music Style

Chloe x Halle write and arrange all their songs in their home studio. They taught themselves how to play instruments. Halle loves jazz music and has listened to Billie Holiday since she was young. She says Billie Holiday has greatly influenced her singing.

Chloe, who is the main producer for the duo, gets ideas from artists like Grimes, Missy Elliott, and Tune-Yards. The sisters describe their music as "confetti" because it mixes "harmonious" sounds with "heavy beats." They say their style is a blend of their different music tastes. They like to create music with "interesting sounds and nuances."
