Halle Lynn Bailey (born March 27, 2000), also known as Halle, is an American singer and actress. She first became famous as part of the music duo Chloe x Halle with her sister Chloe Bailey. They released albums like The Kids Are Alright (2018) and Ungodly Hour (2020). Together, they earned five Grammy Award nominations. In 2023, Halle released her first solo song, "Angel", which was nominated for a Grammy Award.
As an actress, Halle starred in the TV show Grown-ish (2018–2022). In 2023, she played the main role of Ariel in Disney's movie The Little Mermaid. She also had a role in the musical film The Color Purple.
Halle Bailey's Early Life and Family
Halle Lynn Bailey was born on March 27, 2000. She grew up in Mableton, Georgia, with her older sisters, Ski and Chloe Bailey, and her younger brother, Branson. In 2012, her family moved to Los Angeles. When they were kids, Halle and Chloe started writing their own songs. They learned to play instruments by watching videos on YouTube. Their father, Doug Bailey, who also helped manage their careers, taught them how to write songs from a young age.

Starting Out: Early Work and Music Deal
When she was young, Halle had small acting roles. She appeared in films like Joyful Noise (2012) and the Disney TV movie Let It Shine (2012). She started acting when she was just three years old.
Halle and Chloe started a YouTube channel when they were 11 and 13. They posted covers of popular songs. Their first video to become "viral" was a cover of Beyoncé's song "Pretty Hurts". They began performing as Chloe x Halle by uploading these song covers. They even appeared on The Ellen Show in April 2012. In 2013, the sisters won a competition called Radio Disney's The Next Big Thing. They also made a small appearance in the Disney show Austin & Ally.
In May 2015, both sisters were close to signing with Parkwood Entertainment. This company was founded by the famous singer Beyoncé. In 2016, Parkwood Entertainment officially signed them. They were seen as Beyoncé's "first true musical successors." In April 2016, the Bailey sisters were featured in Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade.
Becoming Famous: Chloe x Halle's Rise

Chloe x Halle released their first music collection, an EP called Sugar Symphony, on April 29, 2016. It was released under Parkwood. The duo also opened for Beyoncé's Formation World Tour in Europe during the summer of 2016.
In March 2017, Chloe x Halle released a mixtape called The Two of Us on YouTube. Rolling Stone magazine included it on their list of Best R&B Albums of 2017. In December 2017, the duo released "Grown," the theme song for the TV series Grown-ish. Halle played Skylar "Sky" Forster in the show. She was a regular cast member from the second season until her character graduated from college at the end of the fourth season.
"Grown" and "The Kids Are Alright" were the first two songs from Chloe x Halle's first studio album, The Kids Are Alright. They announced the album in February 2018. The album was released on March 23, 2018, and received great reviews. Their song "Warrior" was featured in the movie A Wrinkle in Time (2018) and on their album.
In May 2018, it was announced that Chloe x Halle would open for Beyoncé and Jay-Z's On the Run II Tour in the U.S. In December 2018, the duo were nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album for The Kids Are Alright.
On February 3, 2019, Chloe x Halle performed "America the Beautiful" at the Super Bowl LIII. Their performance was praised by Beyoncé and many news outlets. A week later, they honored musician Donny Hathaway by performing his song "Where Is the Love" at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
On June 12, 2020, the duo released their second album, Ungodly Hour. It also received excellent reviews. The album reached number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their song "Do It" was their first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They later released a special edition of Ungodly Hour in February 2021, which included two new songs.
Chloe x Halle performed the American national anthem for the 2020 NFL season kickoff game in September 2020. They also hosted the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in October 2020. In November 2020, they received several nominations at the 2020 Soul Train Music Awards. They also earned nominations for three Grammy Awards at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. They performed "Baby Girl" at the 2020 Billboard Women in Music ceremony, where Beyoncé gave them the Rising Star Award.
Solo Career: New Adventures

In July 2019, Disney announced that Halle Bailey would play Ariel in The Little Mermaid. This was a live-action remake of the 1989 animated movie. Some people had strong opinions about her casting because she is African-American. However, director Rob Marshall said that Halle had the perfect mix of spirit, heart, youth, and a beautiful singing voice needed for the role. He even said her singing brought him to tears. Disney defended their choice, stating that Ariel is a mermaid and can be played by anyone.
The Little Mermaid was released in May 2023. Critics praised Halle's performance. She was nominated for several awards, including the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. She also sang songs for the film's soundtrack.
On October 1, 2021, Halle performed her first solo song, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from Disney's The Lion King. This was for a TV event celebrating Disney World's 50th Anniversary.
In 2023, Halle also starred in the musical film The Color Purple. This movie was based on the stage musical. The film was produced by famous people like Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. As part of the cast, Halle won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. She also sang four songs on the film's soundtrack. One of these songs, "Keep It Movin'", won the Black Reel Award for Outstanding Original Song.
On August 4, 2023, Halle released her first solo song, "Angel". This song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. On March 15, 2024, she released her second solo song, "In Your Hands". Her third song, "Because I Love You", was released on August 30, 2024.
