The Penguin is an exciting American television series made for HBO. It's a spin-off from The Batman movie (2022). The show focuses on the DC Comics character known as the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. The story follows Oz Cobb as he tries to become a powerful figure in Gotham City after a big event. Lauren LeFranc created the series and was also its main producer.
Colin Farrell leads a talented cast, including Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, and Deirdre O’Connell. The series started being developed in 2021 and was officially ordered in 2022. Filming took place in New York from March 2023 to February 2024.

How The Series Was Made
Developing the Story
The idea for The Penguin came from the movie The Batman. Director Matt Reeves thought about exploring the Penguin's story more. Studio executives decided it would be a great idea for a TV series. Lauren LeFranc was chosen to write the series and lead the production.
The show is part of the "Batman Epic Crime Saga," which is a special group of stories separate from the main DC Universe. This allows the creators to tell unique stories. The series has eight episodes, each about an hour long.
Choosing the Actors
Colin Farrell was asked to play the Penguin again, after his role in The Batman. He was excited to explore the character even more. Cristin Milioti joined the cast as Sofia Falcone, a key rival to Oz. Rhenzy Feliz was cast as Victor Aguilar, Oz's young helper. Many other talented actors also joined the show.
Filming Locations
Filming for The Penguin started on March 1, 2023, in New York City. The production used places like Silvercup Studios in Queens. Filming had to pause for a few months in 2023 due to labor disputes in Hollywood. Production started again in late November 2023 and finished on February 17, 2024.
Music and Design
Mick Giacchino, whose father composed the music for The Batman, created the score for this series. Helen Huang designed the costumes, and Kalina Ivanov was in charge of the production design.
Getting Ready for Release
The first sneak peek of the series was shown on April 12, 2023. It gave fans a look at the dark and intense world of the show. More footage was released in December 2023.
The first full trailer was shown in March 2024. It highlighted Oz's journey to become a powerful figure. A second trailer came out in June 2024, showing more about the characters and the city after the events of The Batman. The series was also promoted at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.

The Penguin premiered in the United States on HBO on September 19, 2024. New episodes aired every Sunday night until November 10, 2024. The series is also available to stream on Max. It was also shown in some European countries on Sky Atlantic and Sky's streaming service Now. The series was released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 18, 2025.
What's Next for The Penguin?
Matt Reeves has confirmed that Colin Farrell will play the Penguin again in the next The Batman movie, which is planned for release in 2027. Colin Farrell has also said he would be interested in making a second season of The Penguin if the opportunity arises. The creators have started discussing ideas for what a second season could be about.
