British Academy of Film and Television Arts facts for kids
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, usually called BAFTA, is a British group. It gives out special awards every year. These awards celebrate the best in movies, TV shows, children's films and TV, and other media. The award for movies is known as the British Academy Film Awards.
BAFTA started in 1947. Back then, it was called The British Film Academy. In 1958, this Academy joined with another group. That group was The Guild of Television Producers and Directors. Together, they became The Society of Film and Television. This name changed again in 1976 to what we know today: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
BAFTA's main office is in London, on a street called Piccadilly. But it also has smaller offices in other places. You can find them in Northern England, Scotland, and Wales. There are even offices in the United States, in New York City and Los Angeles.
The BAFTA award itself is a special mask. It looks like a theatrical mask. An American sculptor named Mitzi Cunliffe designed it. The Guild of Television Producers asked her to create it in 1955.
