Early Life and Family
Prince William was born in London at St Mary's Hospital, London on 21 June 1982. He was the first child of King Charles III (who was then the Prince of Wales) and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. His grandmother, Elizabeth II, was the Queen at the time. His full name, William Arthur Philip Louis, was announced a week later. He was baptised at Buckingham Palace on 4 August.
William was the first child born to a Prince and Princess of Wales since 1905. When he was nine months old, William went on his first trip overseas with his parents. They visited Australia and New Zealand in 1983. He also traveled with his family to Canada in 1991 and 1998.
Prince William and his younger brother, Harry, grew up in Kensington Palace in London. They also spent time at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. His mother, Diana, called him "Wombat" sometimes. She wanted him and Harry to experience more of normal life than other royal children. She took them to places like Walt Disney World and McDonald's. She also took them to visit AIDS clinics and homeless shelters.
William's parents divorced in 1996. His mother, Diana, died in a car accident on 31 August 1997. William was 15 years old at the time. He was staying at Balmoral Castle with his brother and father. His father, Charles, told them about their mother's death the next morning. At his mother's funeral, William and Harry walked behind her coffin. They walked with their father, their grandfather Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and their uncle Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer.
Education and Learning
William went to private schools. He started at Jane Mynors' nursery school and Wetherby School in London. After that, he attended Ludgrove School in Berkshire. At Ludgrove, he played football, swam, played basketball, and ran cross country running.
He then went to Eton College. There, he studied geography, biology, and history of art. He was good at swimming and became captain of the swimming team at Eton. He also played water polo and football. Sending William to Eton was a change from family tradition. Many royal children had gone to Gordonstoun.
After Eton, William took a year off before university. He trained with the British Army in Belize. He also worked on dairy farms in England and visited Africa. As part of a program in Chile, he worked on building projects and taught English. He lived with other young volunteers and helped with chores, even cleaning toilets. He also worked as a guest DJ at a local radio station. His interest in Africa led him to learn some Swahili.
In 2001, William started at the University of St Andrews. The media agreed to respect his privacy while he was there. Students were also asked not to share stories about him. He first studied Art History but later changed to Geography. William wrote his final paper on the coral reefs of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. He graduated in 2005 with a Master of Arts degree. While at university, he played for the Scottish national water polo team. To avoid attention, other students called him "Steve."
After university, William gained experience in land management at Chatsworth House. He also worked in banking at HSBC. In 2014, he took a course at Cambridge University. This course helped him prepare to manage the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duchy is a large estate that provides income for the monarch's eldest son. William inherited it when his father became King in 2022.

When William was 21, he became a Counsellor of State. This meant he could act on behalf of the Queen if she was away or unwell. He first did this in 2003. In July 2005, he went on his first solo trip overseas to New Zealand. He attended events to remember World War II.

Because he was second in line to the throne, there were concerns about him serving in combat. The government decided it would be too risky for him and others. Instead, William trained in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. He became a sub-lieutenant in the Navy and a flying officer in the Air Force. After his training, his father presented him with his RAF wings.

In January 2009, William joined the RAF full-time. He trained to be a helicopter pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force. He graduated in January 2010. He then moved to RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales, to train on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter. He graduated in September 2010. He also served in the Falkland Islands for six weeks in 2012. By June 2012, he was qualified to be the main pilot of a Sea King. On 13 July 2015, William started working full-time as a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). He felt this was a natural step from his search-and-rescue role. He gave his entire salary to the EAAA charity. William often dealt with serious medical cases. He has spoken about how seeing difficult situations affected his mental health.
