Many people consider him an auteur, which is a director with a very personal and recognizable style. He is one of Australia's most successful directors. Four of his films are among the top ten highest-earning Australian movies ever made.

Luhrmann is best known for his Red Curtain Trilogy. This is a group of three films: Strictly Ballroom (1992), William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Moulin Rouge! (2001). His other major films include Australia (2008), The Great Gatsby (2013), and Elvis (2022). He also created the Netflix show The Get Down (2016), about the start of hip-hop music.

Besides movies, Luhrmann has directed plays and operas. He is also known for the popular soundtracks from his films, which often mix modern pop songs with the movie's historical setting.

Early Life and Family

Baz Luhrmann was born in Sydney, Australia. His mother, Barbara, was a ballroom dance teacher, and his father, Leonard, ran a gas station and a movie theater. He grew up in a small country town called Herons Creek.

He got the nickname "Baz" at school because his hair looked like the puppet character Basil Brush. He later legally changed his name to Bazmark.

After high school, Luhrmann acted in the Australian film Winter of Our Dreams. He used the money he earned from acting to start his own theater company. In 1983, he began studying acting at the famous National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and graduated in 1985.

On January 26, 1997, Luhrmann married Catherine Martin. She is a production and costume designer who has worked on all of his films. They have two children together.

The Red Curtain Trilogy

Luhrmann's first three films are known as the Red Curtain Trilogy. These films use a theatrical style to tell their stories.

  • Strictly Ballroom (1992): This was his first movie. It's a romantic comedy about the world of competitive ballroom dancing. The story was first a short play he created.
  • Romeo + Juliet (1996): This is a modern version of William Shakespeare's famous play. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The movie keeps Shakespeare's original words but sets the story in a modern city. It was a huge success and won many awards.
  • Moulin Rouge! (2001): This musical is set in Paris around the year 1900. It tells the love story of a writer (played by Ewan McGregor) and a cabaret star (played by Nicole Kidman). The film is famous for using modern pop songs from artists like Madonna and Elton John. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

  • Australia (2008): This historical movie stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. It tells a love story set during World War II. The film also explores an important part of Australian history called the Stolen Generations. This refers to a time when many Aboriginal children were taken from their families. The movie was a big box office hit in Europe and Australia.
  • The Great Gatsby (2013): Luhrmann adapted the classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is known for its lavish party scenes and 3D visuals. The soundtrack mixed 1920s jazz music with modern hip-hop from artists like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. It became Luhrmann's highest-grossing film.
  • Elvis (2022): This movie tells the life story of the rock and roll legend Elvis Presley, played by Austin Butler. It focuses on his relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. The film was a huge success and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
