The Red Curtain Trilogy
Luhrmann's first three films are known as the Red Curtain Trilogy. These films use a theatrical style to tell their stories.
- Strictly Ballroom (1992): This was his first movie. It's a romantic comedy about the world of competitive ballroom dancing. The story was first a short play he created.
- Romeo + Juliet (1996): This is a modern version of William Shakespeare's famous play. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The movie keeps Shakespeare's original words but sets the story in a modern city. It was a huge success and won many awards.
- Moulin Rouge! (2001): This musical is set in Paris around the year 1900. It tells the love story of a writer (played by Ewan McGregor) and a cabaret star (played by Nicole Kidman). The film is famous for using modern pop songs from artists like Madonna and Elton John. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Epic Stories and Adaptations
After the trilogy, Luhrmann directed bigger, more epic films.
- Australia (2008): This historical movie stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. It tells a love story set during World War II. The film also explores an important part of Australian history called the Stolen Generations. This refers to a time when many Aboriginal children were taken from their families. The movie was a big box office hit in Europe and Australia.
- The Great Gatsby (2013): Luhrmann adapted the classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is known for its lavish party scenes and 3D visuals. The soundtrack mixed 1920s jazz music with modern hip-hop from artists like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. It became Luhrmann's highest-grossing film.
