BAFTA is a famous British group that holds big award shows for movies, TV shows, kids' entertainment, and video games. Since 1964, talented people who design the sets, props, and overall visual style of films have received this award. For its first few years, from 1964 to 1975, it was called the Best Art Direction award.
One designer, Stuart Craig, has been nominated for this award an incredible 16 times!

What is Production Design?
Production design is like being the chief architect and artist for a movie. The production designer is in charge of everything you see on screen that isn't an actor or a special effect. This includes the sets, locations, props, costumes, and even the colors used in a film. Their job is to create the perfect visual world that helps tell the story. They work closely with the director to make sure every detail fits the movie's mood and message.
How the BAFTA Award for Best Production Design Works
Each year, a group of experts at BAFTA watches many films. They choose a few movies that have truly outstanding production design. These are called the nominees. Then, from these nominees, they pick one winner who receives the prestigious BAFTA mask trophy. The award is given for films released in a specific year, but the ceremony itself happens the following year. For example, awards for films released in 2025 were given out in early 2026.
Past Winners of the Best Production Design Award

Some famous films that won during that time include Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
