- January 1 – Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined the EU.
- January 2 – Siad Barre, the former President of Somalia, passed away. He had been removed from power in 1991.
- January 6 to January 7 – Police in Manila, Philippines, found a bomb-making factory. They also found plans for a large attack. The person behind the plans was arrested later.
- January 9 – Valeri Polyakov set a new record for staying in space. He spent 366 days on the Mir space station.
- January 16 – A large avalanche hit the village of Sudavik in Iceland. It sadly killed 14 people.
- January 17 – A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit near Kobe, Japan. It was called the "Great Hanshin earthquake". This earthquake caused a lot of damage and killed 6,433 people.
- January 30 – John Howard became the leader of the Liberal Party of Australia.
- January 31 – U.S. President Bill Clinton helped Mexico. He gave them a $20 billion loan to prevent their economy from collapsing.
- February 21 – Steve Fossett landed in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada. He set a record for flying solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon.
- March 20 – A dangerous gas was released on five subway trains in Tokyo, Japan. This event killed 12 people and injured many more.
- March 22 – Valeri Polyakov returned to Earth. He had spent 438 days in space, setting a new record.
- April 19 – A bombing happened outside the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City. This terrible event killed 168 people.
- April 28 – A gas explosion at a subway construction site in Daegu, South Korea, killed 101 people. Most of them were teenage boys.
- May 16 – Japanese police raided the headquarters of a group near Mt. Fuji. They arrested its leader.
- May 17 – Jacques Chirac became President of France.
- May 28 – A strong 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Neftegorsk, Russia. At least 2,000 people were killed.
- June 13 – Jacques Chirac announced that nuclear tests would continue in French Polynesia.
- June 16 – Salt Lake City was chosen to host the 2002 Winter Olympics.
- June 29 – The roof of the Sampoong shopping center in Seoul, South Korea, collapsed.
- July 11 – A terrible event happened in Europe. A large number of men and boys were killed in what became known as the Srebrenica massacre.
- July 18 – The Soufriere Hills volcano started erupting on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean.
- July 21 – The People's Liberation Army fired missiles into the waters north of Taiwan.
- August 6 – The 50th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing was remembered.

- August 29 – Eduard Shevardnadze, the President of Georgia, survived an attack.

- October 17 – Jeanne Calment was confirmed as the oldest person on record. She was 120 years and 238 days old.
- October 26 – Another avalanche hit the village of Flateyri in Iceland.
- October 28 – A fire in the Baku metro killed 289 people.
- October 30 – Voters in Quebec, Canada, voted against becoming independent.
- November 4 – Yitzhak Rabin, the Prime Minister of Israel, was shot and killed at a peace rally in Tel Aviv.
- November 10 – Human rights activists, including writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, were executed in Nigeria.
- November 30 – Javier Solana became the Secretary-General of NATO.
- December 20 – American Airlines Flight 965 crashed in Colombia. This accident killed 159 people.
- December 30 – The coldest temperature in the UK was recorded. It was -27.2 degrees Celsius in Altnaharra, Scotland.
- December 31 – Bill Watterson ended his famous comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, after 10 years.
