- On January 2, a rule started in the United States that stopped television channels from showing cigarette advertisements.
- On January 3, the BBC Open University began in the United Kingdom. This allowed people to study for degrees from home.
- On January 18, workers in Poland went on strike. They wanted the interior minister, Kazimierz Switala, to resign. He did resign on January 23.
- On January 19, oil companies from Western countries started talking with OPEC (countries that produce oil) in Tehran. They wanted to agree on stable oil prices. They signed a deal on February 14 with six countries from the Persian Gulf.
- On January 25, Idi Amin took control of Uganda and became its new president.
- Also on January 25, Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state in India.
- There was a conflict between West Pakistan and India. India also became involved in the conflict in East Pakistan.
- On December 6, the government of India officially recognized the former East Pakistan region as a new country called Bangladesh.
- On December 16, East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh after West Pakistani forces surrendered.
- DIC, a company that makes animation, was started in Paris, France.
- On November 24, during a big thunderstorm over Washington, a mysterious man known as D. B. Cooper hijacked a plane. He got US$200,000 in ransom money. He then jumped from the plane and was never seen again. This is still the only unsolved skyjacking in history.
