- January 12 – The Nigerian Civil War ended. This was a long conflict in the country of Nigeria.

- March 1 – Rhodesia declared itself a republic. This meant it became an independent state with its own government.
- April 29 – The United States sent troops into Cambodia. This was part of the Vietnam War.
