Edward James Begley (born March 25, 1901 – died April 28, 1970) was a famous American actor. He worked in plays, on the radio, in movies, and on TV. He won an Oscar for his role in the movie Sweet Bird of Youth (1962).
Begley also appeared in classic films like 12 Angry Men (1957) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). He was even nominated for an Emmy Award for his TV role in Inherit the Wind. You might know his son, Ed Begley Jr., who is also an actor and works to protect the environment.

Early Life and Adventures
Edward Begley was born in Hartford, Connecticut. His parents were immigrants from Ireland. He left school when he was in fifth grade.
Young Edward ran away from home many times. He worked at carnivals, fairs, and small circuses. Later, he sold brushes and delivered milk. He also served in the United States Navy for four years during World War I.
Acting Career Highlights
Begley started acting on Broadway and radio when he was a teenager. He was in the popular musical Going Up in 1917. He also played Sgt. O'Hara in the radio show The Fat Man. He even played the famous detective Charlie Chan on the radio!
Early TV and Film Roles
In the late 1940s, Begley began to appear in movies. He often played important supporting roles. In 1952, he starred in the TV show Leave It to Larry. Ed Begley died from a heart attack on April 28, 1970. He was at a party in Hollywood, California. He is buried in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in California.
