- In 275, the Roman Senate chose an emperor for the very last time. They elected Marcus Claudius Tacitus, who was 75 years old.
- In 762, a group called the Alids, led by Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya, began a revolt against the Abbasid Caliphate.
- In 1066, King Harold II of England defeated Harald Hardrada, the invading King of Norway, at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
- In 1237, England and Scotland signed the Treaty of York, which set their common border.
- In 1396, Ottoman Emperor Bayezid I defeated a Christian army at the Battle of Nicopolis.
- In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa became one of the first Europeans to see the Pacific Ocean.
- In 1555, the Peace of Augsburg was signed. This agreement helped end religious conflicts in the Holy Roman Empire between Catholics and Protestants.
From 1601 to 1900
- In 1690, Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick, the first newspaper in the Americas, was published. It only came out once!
- In 1768, the country of Nepal became united.
- In 1775, during the American Revolution, Ethan Allen surrendered to British forces after trying to capture Montreal.
- Also in 1775, Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec began its journey.
- In 1789, the United States Congress passed twelve changes to the Constitution. Ten of these became the Bill of Rights, which protects important freedoms.
- In 1790, four famous opera groups from Anhui, China, performed in Beijing for the Qianlong Emperor's 80th birthday. This helped bring Anhui opera to the capital.
- In 1804, the Teton Sioux Native American tribe demanded a "toll" from the Lewis and Clark Expedition to let them travel further upriver.
- In 1868, the Imperial Russian steam frigate Alexander Nevsky was shipwrecked off the coast of Jutland.

- In 1915, World War I: The Second Battle of Champagne began.
- In 1918, World War I: The Battle of Megiddo ended. This was a major victory for the British Army.
- In 1926, the international Convention to Suppress the Slave Trade and Slavery was first signed, aiming to end slavery worldwide.
