- 787 – The Second Council of Nicaea met in a church called Hagia Sophia. This was an important meeting for the Christian church.
- 1568 – Spanish ships defeated an English fleet led by John Hawkins. This happened during the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa near Veracruz.
Events from 1601 to 1900
- 1645 – The Battle of Rowton Heath in England was a big win for the Parliament's army over King Charles's forces.
- 1674 – Shivaji, a famous Indian ruler, had his second special coronation ceremony.
- 1789 – The United States Congress passed the Judiciary Act. This law created the job of the Attorney General and set up the federal court system, including the Supreme Court.
- 1830 – A group of important people formed the Provisional Government of Belgium, starting the process for Belgium to become an independent country.
- 1841 – The Sultanate of Brunei gave control of Sarawak to James Brooke.
- 1846 – During the Mexican–American War, General Zachary Taylor captured Monterrey.
- 1852 – The first airship that could carry passengers and was powered by an engine, called the Giffard dirigible, flew about 17 miles (27 km) from Paris to Trappes.
- 1853 – Admiral Despointes officially claimed New Caledonia for France.
- 1869 – On a day known as Black Friday (1869), gold prices dropped very quickly. This happened after President Ulysses Grant ordered the government to sell a lot of gold, stopping a plan by Jay Gould and James Fisk to control the gold market.
- 1877 – The Battle of Shiroyama was a major victory for the Imperial Japanese Army, ending the Satsuma Rebellion.
- 1890 – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially announced that they would no longer practice polygamy (having more than one spouse).

- 1906 – U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Devils Tower in Wyoming as the first National Monument in the United States.
- 1906 – Rumors caused racial tensions to grow, leading to the Atlanta Race Riot. This event made racial segregation even worse.
- 1911 – His Majesty's Airship No. 1, Britain's first large, rigid airship, was damaged by strong winds before its first flight.
- 1929 – Pilot Jimmy Doolittle made the first flight without looking out the window. This showed that planes could be flown completely using instruments, from takeoff to landing.
- 1932 – Gandhi and Dr. Ambedkar agreed to the Poona Pact. This agreement set aside special seats in Indian legislatures for the "Depressed Classes" (also known as Untouchables).
- 1935 – Earl and Weldon Bascom held the first rodeo ever to take place outdoors under electric lights.
- 1946 – Cathay Pacific Airways was started in Hong Kong.
- 1948 – The Honda Motor Company, a famous car and motorcycle company, was founded.
- 1950 – A thick haze from the huge Chinchaga fire in western Canada covered the eastern United States.
- 1954 – The AEC Routemaster, the famous red London bus, was first introduced.
- 1957 – President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock, Arkansas. This was to make sure that schools followed the law to end segregation, allowing the Little Rock Nine students to attend.
- 1960 – The USS Enterprise, the world's first aircraft carrier powered by nuclear energy, was launched.
- 1972 – Japan Airlines Flight 472 accidentally landed at Juhu Aerodrome instead of the main Santacruz Airport in Bombay, India.
- 1973 – Guinea-Bissau declared its independence from Portugal.
- 1975 – Climbers on the Southwest Face expedition became the first people to reach the top of Mount Everest by climbing one of its faces, instead of using a ridge route.
- 1993 – The monarchy (rule by a king or queen) was brought back in Cambodia, with Norodom Sihanouk becoming king.
- 1996 – Representatives from 71 countries signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty at the United Nations. This treaty aims to stop nuclear weapons tests.
- 2005 – Hurricane Rita hit the United States, causing a lot of damage in parts of Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
- 2007 – Many thousands of people took part in protests against the government in Yangon, Burma. These were the biggest protests in 20 years.
- 2008 – Thabo Mbeki stepped down as president of South Africa.
- 2009 – The G20 summit began in Pittsburgh, with 30 world leaders attending.
- 2013 – A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit southern Pakistan, sadly killing at least 327 people.
- 2014 – The Mars Orbiter Mission made India the first Asian country to reach Mars orbit. It was also the first country in the world to succeed on its very first try.
- 2015 – More than 1,100 people died and many more were hurt in a stampede during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
- 2023 – NASA's OSIRIS-REx capsule, carrying samples from the asteroid 101955 Bennu, landed safely back on Earth.
