Key Events of 1755
New Beginnings and Discoveries
- January 25 – A major new school, Moscow University, was officially opened in Russia. This became a very important place for learning.
- April 15 – A huge book called A Dictionary of the English Language was published by Samuel Johnson. He had worked on this dictionary for many years, starting in 1746. It helped standardize the English language.
- December 2 – The second Eddystone Lighthouse, a tall tower with a light to guide ships, was sadly destroyed by a fire.
Important Events in North America
- February 20 – General Braddock arrived in Virginia, a British colony in North America. He came to lead the British soldiers against the French in the French and Indian War.
- July 9 – During the French and Indian War, British soldiers and American colonists faced a terrible defeat. They were ambushed by French and Native American forces. British General Edward Braddock was badly hurt and later died. Colonel George Washington, who would later become the first President of the United States, survived this battle.
- November 18 – An earthquake happened near Cape Ann, Massachusetts, causing a lot of damage to buildings and homes.
- The Great Expulsion began. This was when many Acadians, who were French-speaking people living in what is now Canada, were forced to leave their homes by the British. They were made to leave because of agreements between the French and British, which meant the British took control of their land.

- November 1 – A massive earthquake and tsunami hit Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. The city was almost completely destroyed, and between 60,000 and 90,000 people lost their lives. This was one of the deadliest earthquakes in history.
- The sultanate of Mataram on the island of Java was divided into two separate kingdoms: the sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. This changed the political map of the region.
- Wolsey, a company that makes clothes, was started in Leicester, England. This business celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2005, showing how long it has been around.
