  • On February 11, the Pennsylvania Hospital opened its doors. This was a very important event because it was the first hospital ever in the United States. It helped people who were sick or injured.
  • On March 23, the Halifax Gazette was published for the first time. This newspaper was a big deal because it was the very first newspaper in Canada. It helped people stay informed about what was happening.
  • On June 6, a large fire caused a lot of damage in the city of Moscow, Russia. Fires were a big problem in cities back then because many buildings were made of wood.
  • On June 15, the famous inventor and scientist Benjamin Franklin did a very important experiment. He used a kite and a key during a thunderstorm to show that lightning is actually a form of electricity. This discovery helped us understand more about how electricity works.

  • On September 14, the British Empire made a huge change to its calendar system. They switched from the old Julian calendar to the newer Gregorian calendar. This meant that people had to skip eleven days! After September 2, the next day was suddenly September 14. This change helped the British Empire's calendar match the rest of Europe.

  • An English scientist named Lord John Davies made an important observation. He saw something that scientists later understood as "respiratory collapse." This is when a person's breathing system stops working properly.
