Important Events of 1751
New Ideas and Learning
- Adam Smith, a very smart thinker, became a professor at the University of Glasgow. He taught about logic, which is how we think clearly and reason.
- The very first part of a huge book called the Encyclopédie was published. This book was a big collection of all the knowledge known at the time. It helped spread new ideas across Europe.
- A new school, The Academy and College of Philadelphia, was started. This school later became the famous University of Pennsylvania. It was an important step for education in America.
Changes in England
- On March 25, something interesting happened in England and Wales. This was the last time New Year's Day was officially celebrated on March 25. Soon, the New Year would start on January 1, just like it does today!
- On March 31, a young man named George III became the Prince of Wales. This meant he was next in line to become king. His mother, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, became the Dowager Princess of Wales.
Helping People in America
- The Pennsylvania Hospital was founded. This was the very first hospital in the British colonies in America. It was a big step forward for helping sick people and providing medical care.
