Key Events of 1749
New Settlements and Land Grants
- January 3 – Benning Wentworth started issuing the first of the New Hampshire Grants. These grants were land deeds that eventually led to the creation of the state of Vermont.
- May 19 – King George II of Great Britain gave a special document, called a charter, to the Ohio Company. This charter gave them land around the area where the Ohio River forks.
- July 9 – The British founded a new naval settlement called Halifax, Nova Scotia. This new town was built to be a strong British presence, similar to the French town of Louisbourg.
Music and Science
- April 27 – A famous piece of music by George Frideric Handel, called Music for the Royal Fireworks, was performed for the first time. The show ended a bit early because a small fire broke out!
- September 15 – Based on scientific calculations, the dwarf planet Pluto moved outside Neptune's orbit. It stayed the outermost planet in our solar system until 1979.

- The famous book Tom Jones by Henry Fielding was published this year.
