List of decades, centuries, and millennia facts for kids
We often talk about time in big chunks like years, decades, centuries, and millennia. These are like different-sized containers that help us organize history. A decade is 10 years, a century is 100 years, and a millennium is 1,000 years. Using these terms helps us understand when events happened, whether it was a long time ago or more recently.
When we talk about dates, you'll often see "BC" or "AD". "BC" means "Before Christ" and counts backwards from the year 1. So, 100 BC is 100 years before the year 1. "AD" means "Anno Domini" (which is Latin for "in the year of the Lord") and counts forward from the year 1. We are currently in the AD period.

Understanding Time Periods
Dividing time into these blocks makes it easier to study history. Imagine trying to learn about every single year since humans existed! It would be too much. Instead, we group years together to see bigger patterns and changes.
What is a Millennium?
A millennium is the longest of these common time periods, lasting 1,000 years. For example, the 1st millennium AD included years 1 to 1000. The 2nd millennium AD was from 1001 to 2000. We are currently in the 3rd millennium AD, which started in 2001 and will end in 3000.
What is a Century?
A century is a period of 100 years. The 20th century, for instance, ran from 1901 to 2000. The 21st century began in 2001 and will end in 2100. When you hear about the "18th century," it refers to the years 1701 to 1800.
What is a Decade?
A decade is the shortest of these common groupings, covering 10 years. The "1990s" refers to the years 1990 through 1999. The "2020s" refers to the years 2020 through 2029. Decades help us look at shorter trends and changes within a century.
Exploring History Through Time
These time divisions help us explore different eras. For example, the earliest millennia listed, like the 13th millennium BC, were times when early humans were just starting to develop tools and agriculture. As we move closer to AD, we see the rise of ancient civilizations like those in Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
The table below shows how these time periods are organized. You can click on the links to learn more about specific centuries or decades. This helps historians and students find information about particular moments in time.
