The Byzantine Empire's Golden Age
One of the most powerful empires during this century was the Byzantine Empire. This empire was the eastern part of the old Roman Empire. Its capital city was Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).
Emperor Justinian I
The Byzantine Empire reached its peak under Justinian I, who ruled from 527 to 565. He wanted to bring back the glory of the old Roman Empire. Justinian was a very ambitious ruler.
Justinian's Achievements
Justinian's greatest achievement was creating a new set of laws. This was called the Corpus Juris Civilis, or "Justinian's Code." These laws were very important. They influenced legal systems for hundreds of years. He also built many amazing buildings. The most famous is the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It was a huge church.
Wars and Challenges
Justinian fought many wars to regain lost Roman lands. His generals, like Belisarius, were very skilled. They won back parts of Italy and North Africa. However, these wars were very expensive. They also weakened the empire.
The Plague of Justinian
A terrible disease hit the Byzantine Empire during Justinian's rule. This was the Plague of Justinian. It was a pandemic (a widespread disease). The plague killed millions of people. It greatly reduced the population. This made it harder for the empire to recover.
New Kingdoms and Cultures
While the Byzantine Empire was strong, other parts of the world were also changing. New kingdoms were forming.
Europe After Rome

- The Visigoths controlled Spain.
These kingdoms were often at war with each other. They were also developing new ways of life.
Rise of the Anglo-Saxons
In Britain, the Anglo-Saxons were settling. They formed several small kingdoms. These kingdoms would later become England. This period is sometimes called the "Dark Ages" in Europe. However, it was a time of new beginnings.
Asia's Developments
Asia also saw important changes.
- In China, the Northern and Southern Dynasties period continued. This was a time of division. However, culture and technology still advanced.
- The Sassanid Empire was a major power in Persia (modern-day Iran). It was a rival to the Byzantine Empire. They often fought over land and trade routes.
- In Japan, the Kofun period was ending. The Asuka period was beginning. This brought new ideas from China and Korea. These included Buddhism and new government styles.
Important Discoveries and Ideas
The 6th century was not just about wars. People also made progress in many areas.
