The 14th century BC was a time of important changes and events across the ancient world. Many powerful kingdoms were growing, and people were building amazing structures that we can still see today. This period saw new leaders rise and old traditions continue.
Important Events
- Around 1300 BC, a legendary king of Athens named Cecrops II passed away after ruling for 40 years. His son, Pandion II, became the new king. However, Pandion II was later forced to leave Athens by the sons of his uncle, Metion. Metion's family then took control of Athens. Pandion II went to a city called Megara. There, he married the king's daughter and eventually became king of Megara himself. After Pandion II died, his own sons returned to Athens and took back the throne from Metion's family.
- In 1307 BC, Adad-nirari I became the new king of Assyria, a powerful kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia.
- Around 1300 BC, Pangeng, a ruler of the Shang Dynasty in ancient China, moved the capital city to a place called Yin. This was a very important move for the dynasty.
- About 1300 BC, a new way of life began to appear in Europe, known as the Urnfield culture. People from this culture buried the ashes of their dead in urns, which were then placed in large fields.
- Around 1300 BC, some people living in the "Eastern Woodlands" area of North America started building huge earthworks. These were large mounds made of earth and stone. One of the earliest and most famous examples is Poverty Point in Louisiana.
- Between 1300 BC and 1200 BC, the famous Treasury of Atreus was built in Mycenae, Greece. This was a large, beehive-shaped tomb. It was later explored by an archaeologist named Christos Stamatakis in 1878.
- Also between 1300 BC and 1200 BC, a grand palace was constructed in Pylos, another important city in ancient Greece.
