The 1190s were a busy time in history, with big changes happening in both Japan and England. New leaders came to power, shaping the future of these nations. Let's explore some of the key events from this exciting decade!
Major Events of the 1190s
Japan's First Shogun
In 1192, a very important event happened in Japan. A powerful leader named Minamoto no Yoritomo was given the special title of shogun. Think of a shogun as a top military commander who also ruled the country.
This moment was a huge deal because it officially started the Kamakura shogunate. A shogunate was a type of government where military leaders held the real power, even though an emperor was still the official head of state. The Kamakura shogunate was the very first one in Japan's long history, and it lasted for many years, changing how Japan was governed.
A New King for England
Towards the end of the decade, on May 27, 1199, a new king took the throne in England. This was John Lackland, who became King of England.
John became king after his older brother, Richard the Lion Hearted, passed away. John's coronation, which is the ceremony where a new king is officially crowned, took place in the famous Westminster Abbey.
John was sometimes called "Lackland" because he was the youngest son of King Henry II. In those days, the oldest son usually inherited most of the family's lands and wealth. Because John was younger, he didn't have much land of his own from his family's vast Angevin Empire at first. But he still became a very important king!
