Protests and New Leaders
- In the spring, a big protest happened in London, England. Poor people spoke out against the rich. A man named William Fitz Osbern led this protest.
- A popular story says that Prince Madog of Gwynedd sailed across the ocean. He supposedly reached North America, in what is now Alabama.
- Stefan Prvovencani became the Grand Župan of Serbia. This means he became a very important leader, like a prince or ruler, of the Serbian people.
Water Management in the Netherlands
- In the area we now call the Netherlands, special groups called "water boards" were created. These groups were made to manage water, like rivers and canals, and protect the land from floods. They are some of the oldest democratic groups still working today!
Births
- January 3 — Emperor Tsuchimikado was born in Japan. He later became an emperor (died 1231).
- Alice of Champagne was born. She was the daughter of Henry II of Champagne. Alice later became a regent, which means she ruled for someone else, in the Kingdom of Jerusalem (died 1246).
Deaths
- August 15 — Conrad II, Duke of Swabia passed away. He was a duke from a region in Germany (born 1173).
- King Alfonso II of Aragon died. He was the King of Aragon, a kingdom in what is now Spain (born 1152).
- Ivan Asen I of Bulgaria, a ruler of Bulgaria, died.
- William Fitz Osbern, who led the protest in London, also died this year.
- Vsevolod Svyatoslavich, a prince from the regions of Trubchevsk and Kursk, passed away.
