Major Events of 1246
New Leaders and Empires
In 1246, a new emperor began his rule in Japan. Emperor Go-Saga finished his time as emperor, and Emperor Go-Fukakusa took his place. An emperor is like a king or queen, the highest ruler of a country.
Far away in Asia, a very important event happened for the Mongol Empire. Güyük Khan was officially made the third Great Khan. The Great Khan was the supreme leader of the huge Mongol Empire, which was one of the largest empires in history! Imagine being in charge of such a vast land.
Visitors to the Mongol Empire
A special group of visitors arrived in Karakorum, the capital city of the Mongol Empire, just in time to see Güyük Khan become the Great Khan. This was a "papal mission" led by Giovanni da Pian del Carpine. A papal mission is when a representative, usually a priest or monk, is sent by the Pope (the leader of the Catholic Church) to another country or ruler. They traveled a very long way to meet the new Mongol leader!
New Settlements and Buildings
In what is now Mexico, a group of people called the Mexica settled in a place called Chapultepec. This area was once a strong place for the Toltec people, who lived there before. Settling in Chapultepec was an important step for the Mexica people.
In France, a beautiful church called Sainte-Chapelle was finished. This famous chapel in Paris is known for its stunning stained-glass windows. It was built to hold important religious items.
Changes in European Families
In Europe, a powerful family called the Babenberg dynasty came to an end in Austria. A dynasty is a series of rulers from the same family. This happened when Duke Frederick II passed away. His death meant that his family no longer ruled Austria.
Also in England, a place called Beaulieu Abbey was officially opened. An abbey is a type of monastery, a building where monks or nuns live and worship.
