A Royal Challenge in Portugal
In Portugal, a big disagreement happened within the royal family. King Sancho II of Portugal was the ruler, but some people were unhappy with his leadership. They wanted his brother, Afonso, to become king instead. This led to a rebellion, which is like a major protest or fight against the current ruler. Eventually, Afonso did become the new king of Portugal.
Building Westminster Abbey
In England, a very famous building called Westminster Abbey started to be rebuilt. This abbey is a large, beautiful church in London. It's a place where many important events in British history have happened, like coronations (when kings and queens are crowned) and royal weddings. Starting its rebuilding in 1245 was a huge project that would take many years to complete.
Pope Innocent IV and the Mongols
In 1245, Pope Innocent IV, who was the leader of the Catholic Church, sent special messengers on a long journey. These messengers were sent to the Mongols, a powerful group of people from Asia who had built a huge empire. The Pope wanted to suggest that the Mongols become Christians. He sent these "missions" to try and build a connection with the Mongol leader, known as the Khan.
