Bengali calendar facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bengali Calendar (called Bônggabdô or Bangla Sôn in Bengali) is the official calendar used in Bangladesh. It's also known as the Bangla Calendar. This special calendar helps people keep track of time, holidays, and seasons in a unique way.

The Bengali New Year is a big celebration called Pôhela Bôishakh. It usually falls on April 14th or 15th on the Western calendar. The Bengali year number is different from the Western year. For example, if it's before Pôhela Bôishakh, the Bengali year is 593 years less than the Western year. If it's after Pôhela Bôishakh, it's still 593 years less.

Seasons of the Bengali Calendar

The Bengali calendar is special because it has six seasons, not just four like many other calendars. Each season lasts for two months. These seasons help people understand the different types of weather and changes in nature throughout the year.

What are the Six Seasons?

The seasons start with Pôhela Bôishakh, the New Year. Here are the six seasons:

  • Grishmô (গ্রীষ্ম): This is the Summer season. It's usually the hottest time of the year.
  • Bôrsha (বর্ষা): This is the Rainy or Monsoon season. It brings a lot of rain, which is important for farming.
  • Shôrôt (শরৎ): This season is Autumn. The weather starts to cool down, and the skies are often clear.
  • Hemôntô (হেমন্ত): This is the Dry season. It's a time when crops are harvested.
  • Šhit (শীত): This is Winter. The weather becomes cooler and sometimes foggy.
  • Bôsôntô (বসন্ত): This is Spring. It's a beautiful time when flowers bloom and the weather is pleasant.
