The 1050s were a time of important changes and events around the world. From big battles in Europe to amazing sights in the sky and major religious splits, this decade was full of history. Let's explore some of the key moments from these ten years.

Major Events of the 1050s

Conflicts and Kings

In 1050, a significant event happened in Denmark. The town of Hedeby was attacked and taken over. This was done by King Harald Hardraade of Norway. He was fighting against King Eric Estridsson of Denmark at the time. This shows how kings and countries often had conflicts back then.

Also in 1050, the leadership in Sweden changed. King Anund Jacob was no longer the ruler. He was replaced by Emund the Old. This is part of the long history of Swedish monarchs.

In Japan, a long war began in 1051. It was called the Zenkunen War. This conflict lasted for many years, continuing into the early 1060s. It was one of many clan disputes during the Heian period. These disputes were common as different powerful families fought for control.

A Star Explodes

A truly incredible event happened in 1054. People around the world saw a very powerful supernova. A supernova is when a star explodes, becoming incredibly bright. This particular explosion was so bright that it could be seen even during the daytime!

Today, what's left of that exploding star is known as the Crab Nebula. It's a cloud of gas and dust that astronomers can still study. This event reminds us of the amazing things that happen in space.

The Great Schism

The year 1054 also saw a huge split in the Christian church. This event is known as the Great Schism. It happened between the Catholic Church in the West and the Orthodox Church in the East.

Pope Leo IX, who was the leader of the Catholic Church, and Michael Cerularius, the Patriarch of Constantinople (a top leader in the Eastern Church), officially separated. They each declared that the other was no longer part of their church. This was a very important moment that divided Christianity into two main branches.

Changes in Power

In 1055, a group called the Seljuk Turks made a big move. They captured the city of Baghdad. Baghdad was a very important city at that time. This capture showed the growing power of the Seljuk Turks in the region.

Also in 1055, a new Pope was chosen. Pope Victor II became the leader of the Catholic Church.

A few years later, in 1057, there was a change in the leadership of Scotland. Macbeth, who was the King, was replaced by Lulach. This was another shift in the line of Scottish Monarchs.

Later in 1057, Pope Victor II passed away. He was then succeeded by Pope Stephen IX, who became the new Pope.
