  • It happened in the area we now call the Crab Nebula.
  • On July 4, this supernova was so bright it could be seen during the day for 23 days!
  • People in China, Arab lands, and possibly Native Americans saw it.
  • What was left of this giant explosion became the Crab Nebula (NGC 1952).

Battle and Tornado

The Great Church Split

  • On July 16, a very important event happened for Christians.
  • Cardinal Humbertus, who represented Pope Leo IX, and Michael Cerularius, the leader of the church in Constantinople, officially separated from each other.
  • They each said the other was no longer part of their church. This act is seen by most historians as the start of the East-West Schism.
  • This was a big split between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches.
  • Many years later, in 1965, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras met and cancelled these old separations.
  • However, even today, each church believes it is the true "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church."
