The year 1054 was a time of important events around the world. It was a common year starting on Saturday in the Julian calendar. Many things happened, from amazing sights in the sky to big changes in churches and kingdoms.
Events of 1054
A Star Explodes in the Sky
- Chinese astronomers saw a huge star explosion. This explosion is called a supernova.
- It happened in the area we now call the Crab Nebula.
- On July 4, this supernova was so bright it could be seen during the day for 23 days!
- People in China, Arab lands, and possibly Native Americans saw it.
- What was left of this giant explosion became the Crab Nebula (NGC 1952).
Battle and Tornado
- In February, a battle happened at Mortemer. The Normans fought and defeated a French army.
- The French army was caught stealing, which led to the fight.
- After this battle, King Henry I of France took his main army out of Normandy.
- On April 30, the earliest known tornado in Europe happened in Rosdalla, Kilbeggan, Ireland.
The Great Church Split
- On July 16, a very important event happened for Christians.
- Cardinal Humbertus, who represented Pope Leo IX, and Michael Cerularius, the leader of the church in Constantinople, officially separated from each other.
- They each said the other was no longer part of their church. This act is seen by most historians as the start of the East-West Schism.
- This was a big split between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches.
- Many years later, in 1965, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras met and cancelled these old separations.
- However, even today, each church believes it is the true "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church."
Battles in Scotland and New Rulers
- On July 27, Siward, Earl of Northumbria led an army into Scotland.
- He went to support Malcolm Canmore against Macbeth.
- Macbeth had taken the Scottish throne from Malcolm's father, King Duncan.
- Macbeth was defeated in a battle at Dunsinane.
- In Vietnam, Lý Nhật Tôn became the third king of the Lý Dynasty.
- He changed the country's official name to Đại Việt.
Important People Who Died in 1054
- February 20 – Yaroslav the Wise, who was a powerful prince of Kievan Rus'.
- April 19 – Pope Leo IX, who was the leader of the Catholic Church (born in 1002).
- September 24 – Hermannus Contractus, a famous scholar and musician.
