Africa
In Africa, a powerful group called the Almoravids took control of a city named Aoudaghost. This city is in what we now call Mauritania. The Almoravids were a strong empire that grew in North Africa.
Asia
On December 18, a group known as the Seljuk Turks captured the city of Baghdad. Baghdad was a very important city at that time. They took Al-Malik al-Rahim, a leader, as a prisoner. The Seljuk Turks were a large empire that controlled much of Western Asia.
Europe
On January 11, a woman named Theodora became the empress of the Byzantine Empire. This meant she was the ruler of this large and powerful empire in Eastern Europe.
Later, on October 24, a leader named Ralph the Timid was defeated by the Welsh in a battle.
Also in Europe, King Ferdinand I of Castile began a military campaign. He fought against the Muslim kingdoms in al-Andalus, which is what Spain was called then. He took control of a place called Seia from Christian groups who were allied with the Muslim taifas. Taifas were small, independent Muslim kingdoms in Spain.

The building of the Liaodi Pagoda was finished in Hebei, China. A pagoda is a tall, tiered tower. This one was very special because it was the tallest pagoda in Chinese history! It stood at a height of 84 meters (about 275 feet) tall.
Religious Leaders and Records
On April 13, a new leader for the Catholic Church was chosen. Pope Victor II became the 153rd pope, taking over after Pope Leo IX.
In Hungary, a place of worship called an abbey was set up in Tihany by King András I. The written agreement for this abbey is very important. It is the earliest record we have that is written in the Hungarian language.
