The Start of World War I
- June 28 – A very sad event happened in Sarajevo. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, who was a royal leader, and his wife, Countess Sophie, were killed. They were attacked by a secret group called the Black Hand. This terrible event was a main reason why World War I started soon after.
- August 2 – In Germany, a rule was made. It said that people who were not considered "German" and who didn't live in Germany before this date had to leave the country. This was part of a political plan.
- August 31 – The city of Saint Petersburg in Russia got a new name. Emperor Nicholas II changed its name to Petrograd.
