Mohammed Zahir Shah (born October 16, 1914 – died July 23, 2007) was the very last King of Afghanistan. He ruled his country for four decades, from 1933 to 1973.
Becoming King
Mohammed Zahir Shah became king when he was only 19 years old. This happened after his father was sadly assassinated in November 1933. Because he was so young, his uncle, Shah Mahmood Khan, helped run the government.
His Time as King
King Zahir Shah later took full control of Afghanistan. He worked hard to keep his country neutral. This meant Afghanistan did not take sides in big international arguments. He wanted his country to be peaceful and independent.
End of His Rule
On July 17, 1973, Mohammed Zahir Shah stopped being king. This happened because of a coup, which is when a group takes control of a country's government. This change happened without any fighting. He passed away on July 23, 2007.
