This role was part of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which existed until August 2021.
Who Could Be President?
The rules for becoming president were set out in the 2004 Constitution of Afghanistan. To be a candidate, a person had to meet several requirements:
- They had to be a citizen of Afghanistan.
- They needed to be Muslim and born to Afghan parents.
- They could not be a citizen of any other country.
- They had to be at least 40 years old when they announced they wanted to run for president.

What Powers Did the President Have?
The 2004 Constitution gave the president a lot of power. This included control over the military and making laws. Afghanistan had a national parliament called the National Assembly. It had two parts: the House of the People and the House of Elders. The president had strong powers compared to this parliament. A president could serve for two terms, with each term lasting five years.
Hamid Karzai became president in 2004 and served two terms. After his second term ended in 2014, Ashraf Ghani was elected as the next president of Afghanistan.
The Last President
The last presidential election in Afghanistan took place in 2019. In this election, Ashraf Ghani was re-elected as president. He served until August 2021, when the office was abolished.
