The President of Afghanistan was once the most important leader in the country. This person was the head of state (the main representative of the country) and the head of government (the leader who runs the country's daily affairs). They were also the Commander-in-Chief of Afghanistan's armed forces.

The role of president was created in 1973. It was later re-established in 2004 for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. However, the office was ended in August 2021.

Becoming President

To become president, a person had to meet several important requirements. These rules helped make sure the leader was right for the job.

Who could be President?

  • They had to be a citizen of Afghanistan.
  • They needed to be a Muslim.
  • Both of their parents had to be Afghan citizens.
  • They could not be a citizen of any other country.
  • They had to be at least 40 years old when they wanted to run for president.
  • They could not have been found guilty of serious crimes by a court.
  • A person could only serve as president for two terms, or two times.

What the President Did

The president had many important jobs and powers. These powers were written in the 2004 Constitution of Afghanistan.

President's Powers

The president had strong control over the country's military and laws. Afghanistan had a parliament called the National Assembly. It had two parts: the House of the People and the House of Elders. The president's power was usually stronger than the parliament's.

A president could serve for two terms, with each term lasting five years.

Hamid Karzai was the first president under the 2004 constitution. He served two terms, from 2004 to 2014. After him, Ashraf Ghani was elected as the next president.
