The Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was a very important job. It was the second highest political position in the country. People running for president would choose two people to be their vice presidents. Then, voters would choose the president and their vice presidents together.
Even though Mohammad Daoud Khan started the first Republic in Afghanistan, the idea of a Vice President began earlier. King Amanullah Khan created this role in 1926. He called it "Yawar" at first, which later became "Deputy" or "Vice President." The first person to hold this job was Mahmoud Khan Shaghasi.
