Early Life and Education

Muhammad Sarwar Danish was born in 1961 in a place called Ishtarlay District in central Afghanistan. His family belongs to the Hazara ethnic group. As a Shia Muslim, he traveled to the holy city of Qom in Iran for his higher education.

There, he studied law, journalism, and Islamic studies. He earned a master's degree in Fiqh, which is a deep study of Islamic law. From 1982 to 2001, he was a busy writer. He wrote 15 books and about 700 academic essays. Besides his native Dari and Pashto, he also learned to speak Arabic fluently.

Working with President Karzai

After the Taliban government was removed, a new government was formed under President Hamid Karzai. Muhammad Sarwar Danish played a part in this new beginning.

He was involved in the 2002 loya jirga, which was a large meeting of Afghan leaders. President Karzai also chose him to be a member of the group that wrote the country's new constitution. After Karzai was elected president in 2004, Danish became the Minister of Justice. At that time, he left his political party, Hezbe Wahdat, as required by the country's laws.

Working with President Ghani

Muhammad Sarwar Danish continued his political career under President Ashraf Ghani. He served as the Second Vice President for both of Ghani's terms. First, he worked alongside Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum. Later, after the 2019 elections, he worked with Amrullah Saleh.

In 2021, when Kabul was taken by the Taliban, Danish and his colleagues left Afghanistan. They first went to Turkey. By December 2021, he had moved and settled in New Zealand.
