Karim Khalili (Persian: کریم خلیلی) was born in 1950. He is an important Afghan politician. He leads the Hezb-e Wahdat Islami Afghanistan political party.
From 2004 to 2014, he served as the Second Vice President of Afghanistan. He worked alongside President Hamid Karzai. More recently, he was the head of the Afghan High Peace Council from 2017 to 2019. This council worked to bring peace to Afghanistan. Since 1989, he has also been a key leader of the Wahdat political party, which represents the Hazara community.
Early Life and Education
Karim Khalili was born in 1950 in the Maidan Wardak Province of Afghanistan. He is part of the Hazara ethnic group. As a child, he went to religious schools. In 1970, he moved to Kabul to continue his studies.
During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, he joined the Afghan resistance. This was a group that fought against the invasion. In the early 1990s, he also served as the Minister of Finance for the government at that time.
Personal Life
Karim Khalili has two sons. His older son, Mohammad Taqi Khalili, is currently Afghanistan's Ambassador to Azerbaijan.
