Kids Encyclopedia Facts

International is a word that describes something that involves more than one country. It could be a company, a language, or an organization. When we say something is international, it means it goes beyond just one nation's borders.

For example, international law is a set of rules that many countries agree to follow. It's often used all over the Earth. An international language is a language spoken by people in many different countries.

Where the Word Came From

The word international was first used by a philosopher named Jeremy Bentham. He was a utilitarian, which means he believed in ideas that aimed for the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

Bentham created the word in his book, Introduction to Principles of Morals and Legislation, which was printed in 1780 and published in 1789. He wrote that he hoped the new word was clear enough. He wanted it to describe the part of law that was usually called the law of nations. The word was later adopted into the French language in 1801.
